  1. WebLogic on Oracle Database Appliance: Combining high availability and simplicity Frances Zhao-Perez Cloud Application Foundation Product ManagementSimon Haslam Principal Consultant, Veriton

  2. Program Agenda • WebLogic on Oracle Database Appliance overview • Virtualization Platform • Lifecycle Operations on Oracle Database Appliance • Configuration and Management • WebLogic on ODA customer case study • Q&A

  3. Oracle Database Appliance with WebLogic Server Simple. Reliable. Affordable.

  4. Oracle Database Appliance with WebLogic Server • A simple, affordable and reliable, low maintenance appliance with a highly available WebLogic Server and Oracle RAC deployment • Simplified provisioning/install • Just hours to a best-of-breed HA Web virtualized application and database infrastructure • Simplified investment model • Capacity on Demand with virtualized pricing as your workload changes • Simplified maintenance • Integrated patching – one-throat-to-choke Oracle Database RAC

  6. <Insert Picture Here> Oracle Database Appliance Virtualized Platform

  7. What is the ODA Virtualized Platform? Expanding the ODA with Additional Functionality • Option to install Oracle VM functionality on the Oracle Database Appliance • Options: bare metal or virtualized platform* • Oracle VM is used to partition each server and host multiple workloads • Provides a solution with • Efficient sharing of the platform with one or more applications • Capacity on demand pricing for database and applications • Grow and shrink VCPUs • Isolation between database, middle tier and application workloads *WebLogic requires virtualized option

  8. How Does the Virtualized Platform Work? Single Server to Manage Database, Middle Tier and Applications Oracle Database Appliance • Database runs in the ‘ODA Base’domain to provide native disk performance • WebLogic, Software Load Balancer run in the Domain Us • Domains and CPU pools provide application isolation • Appliance Manager provides: • VM template and domain management Node 1 Node 2 Domain U Domain U Domain U Domain U Domain U Domain U DOM 0 VM Storage Repository ODA Base DOM 0 VM Storage Repository ODA Base • Appliance Manager • Grid Infrastructure • Database • Appliance Manager • Grid Infrastructure • Database

  9. How Are WebLogic and OTD Deployed? • Deploy VMs to run WebLogic Server, Software Load Balancer • HA VIP provides single entry point for application clients with isolation • Oracle VM 3.1.1 supported templates • Applications Solution Platform Oracle Database Appliance HA VIP Node 2 Node 1 Software Load Balancer Software Load Balancer App VMs App VMs WebLogic WebLogic DOM 1 ODA Base DOM0 DOM0 ODA Base • Appliance Manager • Grid Infrastructure • Database • Appliance Manager • Grid Infrastructure • Database

  10. <Insert Picture Here> Oracle Database Appliance Customer Case Study:Veriton & Simplyhealth

  11. Veriton / Simon Haslam • Small, UK-based Oracle partner • Design & build Highly Available Oracle Fusion Middleware systems

  12. Simplyhealth • Leading UK heath insurance firm • looking after the health of over two million individuals • healthcare provider for 11,000 companies • Company’s roots date back nearly 140 years • ~800 agents in 4 call centers • ~2700 EJB calls and 1100 page requests per minute

  13. Drivers for Change • Database upgrade: RAC 10g  11g • Hardware EOL: HP servers & FC SAN • Elapsed time for batch processing

  14. Attractions of ODA • Faster deployment • Simplified patch management • Fewer concerns about compatibility (e.g. firmware) • Database + middleware in an “all in one” box • Competitively priced

  15. Other Considerations • Already has modern NAS / NFS storage tier • A mixture of VMware and Oracle VM Server in use • Simplyhealth decided to run a 4 week Proof of Concept (POC)

  16. How the POC worked Batch tests Create database Import data Provision:virtualized image + ODA base 4 node cluster & deployment WebLogic & OTD images

  17. POC: Hardware / Database Findings • ODA limited to 2 networks so some rework will be required to fit in with existing 10 GbE, 1 GbEand backup network • Copper 10GbE so needed to buy new switch SFPs • Some instability (3 hangs) – possibly due to faulty interconnect cable? • ODA X3-2 hardware was quick, e.g. batch processing in 2.4h compared to nearly >9h on old hardware in production – very confident that there won’t be performance issues

  18. POC: WebLogic on ODA Findings • Initial configuration was straightforward & quick, e.g. WLS configuration: ~45 mins (check!) for 8 VMs (5 WLS, 3 OTD) and RAC database • WebLogic domain configured to best practice (separate admin traffic, etc) • The current one cluster limitation for WebLogic would be OK for production server but not test • Will build custom OVM templates for OFM • Undecided on load balancing/web-tier – plenty of options

  19. Outcome • Simplyhealth have bought 2 ODAs • Plan: production migration to RAC 11g by Oct 20 • Using virtualized ODA only • WebLogic on ODA: probably part of 11g to 12c migration project

  20. Proof of Concept Q & A
