  4. Unit Rates with Speed Example: The top speed of a panther is 426 miles per 6 hours. What is the unit rate? Step One: Set up the unit rate fraction. Step Two: Divide & write your answer as a unit rate. 71 miles per 1 hour or 71 miles per hour

  5. Fractions and Unit Rates with Speed Example: The top speed of a jaguar is ¼ miles per 1/200 of an hour. What is the unit rate? Step One: Set up the unit rate fraction. Step Two: Divide and write your answer as a unit rate. 50 miles per hour

Off Brand: Step One: Step Two: Cutter Brand: Step One: Step Two: Better Buy! It costs less per oz!

  8. More Unit Rates Since 2009, the Amazon Rainforest has been deforested on average of ½ mile2 per 1/14 day. What is the unit rate? Step One: Step Two: = 7 miles2 per day

  9. Application! A caiman can travel ¼ of a mile in ½ of a minute. An anaconda can travel 1/12 of a mile in ¼ of a minute. A human can travel 1/10 of a mile in 1/3 of a minute. Would a human running at this speed be able to outrun either animal? Rate of Caiman: ½ mile per minute Rate of Anaconda: 1/3 mile per minute Rate of Human: 3/10 mile per minute *No!!! A human could not outrun either animal!

  10. Scavenger Hunt Directions: • Pick one scavenger hunt problem on the wall to start at. Solve the problem on the lower half of the sheet. • When you have your answer, look around on the walls until you find your answer on the top of a different scavenger hunt problem. • Solve the problem on the lower half of the sheet. • Repeat unit you are back at the paper with which you started.
