  2. Penguins…… • Penguins are swimming birds. They live in the Southern Hemisphere. • They have webbed and flipper like feet which they use to swim. • Empire Penguins are the biggest type of penguins. • The young chicks of the Empire Penguins sit on their parents feet. • The chicks will not have a complete set of feathers until they are six months old.

  3. Keeping Warm: • Penguins live mainly in Antarctica, but some live in South Africa, South America and Australia. • They have a thick layer of fat just under their skin to keep themselves warm. • They also have lots of feathers all over their bodies to keep them warm.

  4. Penguin Families…. • Penguin families are called colonies. • These can be very big with up to 10 million penguin in one colony. • They huddle in their large colonies to keep each other warm.

  5. The Jackass Penguin… • Jackass penguins get their name from the loud braying noise that they make, which sounds like a donkey. • You can find them on the beaches of Southern Africa. • They are about 70 cm tall and weigh up to 4 kilograms.

  6. Flying underwater…. • Penguins can look silly and clumsy on land. • Penguins are expert swimmers. • They feel very smooth in the water. • They find it hard to walk on land and sometimes slide on their bellies.
