  2. Chmeilnickimassacres • 1648, Poland • Before this, Jews were doing well, tax collecting for Poland • Cossacks revolted against Polish nobility, led by Bogdan Chmielnicki • Lasted 10 years • 100,000 Jews murdered, 700 communities destroyed • Everyone reduced to poverty by high taxes

  3. Shabtai Svi • In 1666 • Times of trouble • Claimed to be the Messiah • Lots of people believed him • Converted to Islam, was a fake • A terrible blow to the Jews

  4. Hassidism • Tough times because of Chmeilniki massacres and false Messiah • People began thinking more mystically • Prayer was more important than study • Joy, faith and prayer • Founded by Baal Shem Tov.

  5. Baal Shem Tov • Born in 1700, School teacher, and synagougue sweeper • Loved Children • knows how to pronounce God’s name • Meditated 7 years in forest • Thought that you could perform miracles • Not an intellectual person

  6. Mitnagim • An intellectual movement critical of Hassidism • Study AND prayer, both are important • Study of Torah leads to a good life • Founded by Elijah of Vilna, the Vilna Gaon, smartest Jew since Moses • Critical of Hassidism

  7. Mitnagim vs. Hassidism • Bitter tensions between groups • Wanted to discredit the other group • No intermarriage between groups, even though both groups Jewish.
