  2. Summary of Accomplishments • Spring Phosphorus sampling of 30 lakes • Aquatic insects survey of 7 lakes • Aquatic plant survey of 16 lakes • Waterfront survey of 16 priority lakes • Bathymetric mapping of 5 lakes • Provided work experience for 6 recent graduates

  3. Spring Phosphorus • Assessment of human impacts on lakes • Three years of spring phosphorus results • Ministry of Environment database • 30 lakes sampled in 2003

  4. Summer Sampling Program • Waterfront surveys • Shoreline features – altered vs. natural • Land features • Bathymetric mapping • Bottom contour maps • GPS technology

  5. Fall Sampling Program • Macro-invertebrate survey • Hanmer, Laurentian, Minnow, Ramsey, Richard, Robinson, St. Charles.

  6. Lake Stewardship-Based Monitoring • Lake Partner Program • Loon Survey • Bacteriological Sampling • Invasive Species Watch • Nature Watch • Ice, Frog, Plant Watch • Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

Merits of Lake Water Quality Program • Collects valuable baseline information • Develops protocols for lake surveys • Monitoring drinking water sources • Inform Council and Citizens on lake health issues • Provides Official Plan technical support • Educates the community & empowers lake residents • Contributes to local resources (human, financial, technical)

Greater Sudbury Lake Improvement Advisory Panel (GSLIAP) – Summaryof Activities • Participated in Visioning Session • Developed Mission and Vision Statements • Formed 3 sub-committees • Doing Science, Communication, Administration • Adopted “City of Lakes” logo • Provided input into the lake water program • Hosted Living With Lakes Forum • Promoted the formation of new stewardship groups

Looking Ahead • Expand lake sampling program • Promote the formation of new lake groups • Promote Lake Trout and Loons as icons for healthy lakes • Safe-guard 9 ecological monitoring lakes • Monitor blue-green algae emergence • Develop website as an electronic learning tool • Investigate septic system re-inspections programs • Investigate storm water run-off issues • Increase partner recruitment
