  2. Define the word Lets define the word abuse, what does it mean and how far can discipline go until it become abuse?Abuse: 1. To hurt or injure by maltreatment, ill-use. 2. To force sexual activity on, or to rape. 3. To assault with contemptuous, coarse, or insulting words.If this definition did not become clear then read this!!!

  3. Define the word more • This basically means children can be disciplined, but not to the point of hitting leaving them with bruises and calling the child inappropriate names. There is absolutely no reason to hit and beet your child continuously to the point where you hear them plead for their life as tears stream down their little face wondering what hey did to deserve this.

  4. Scenario • As you are sitting on the couch watching TV or in the kitchen, you hear the sounds that are most familiar to you. First the yelling, then the screaming, and then the crying, then in the middle of all the commotion you hear a child’s voice pleading for his life at the top of his lungs. Unfortunately this is not uncommon in most house holds. The child abuse in the home still occurs even to this day at alarming rates that keep climbing each day.

  5. Statistics • In 2001, 48% of child victims were male; 51.5% of victims were female. (The sex of 0.5% of the child victims was not reported.) Eighty-one percent of victims were abused by a parent. Fifty-nine percent of perpetrators were female; forty-one percent were male. • Types of maltreatment included: • Neglect 59% • Physical Abuse 19% • Sexual Abuse 10% • Psychological 7% • Other 19.5%

  6. The Big Picture More children from age four and younger die from child abuse and neglect than any other single, leading cause of injury death for infants and young children. includes falls, choking on food, suffocation, drowning, residential fires, and motor vehicle accidents.

The Facts • More than 2.67 million reports of possible maltreatment involving 3 million children were made to child protective service agencies in calendar year 2001. • Child abuse is reported-on average-every 10 seconds. • An estimated 903,000 children were victims of abuse and neglect in 2001 • Nine in 10 Americans polled regard child abuse as a serious problem, yet only 1 in 3 reported abuse when confronted with an actual situation. • Each day in the United States, more than 3 children die as a result of child abuse in the home.

  8. Did you know that? • Did you know 30% of the US population couldn’t tell you the forms of child abuse. Also 60% of the US population do not respond to the child abuse even if it’s in their own home. Now you know!!!

  9. The Forms of Child Abuse • Physical abuse - Any non-accidental injury to a child. This includes hitting, kicking, slapping, shaking, burning, pinching, hair pulling, biting, choking, throwing, shoving, whipping, and paddling. • Sexual abuse - Any sexual act between an adult and child. This includes fondling, penetration, intercourse, exploitation, pornography, exhibitionism, child prostitution, group sex, oral sex, or forced observation of sexual acts.

  10. The Forms of Child Abuse • Neglect - Failure to provide for a child's physical needs. This includes lack of supervision, inappropriate housing or shelter, inadequate provision of food, inappropriate clothing for season or weather, abandonment, denial of medical care, and inadequate hygiene.

Define the word more • Abuse and Neglect of American Children Has Increased 134% Since 1980 • All Types of Child Abuse Have Increased Since 1980 • The Promotion of Children Entering Broken Families Has More Than Quadrupled Since 1950 • Child abuse is everywhere you just have to first realize that it does exist and it is a huge problem in the USA. The children don’t deserve to have a bad start in life so we should wake up and give them the privilege in living with a family who cares and loves the child.

Activity • Get into groups of five and come up with ten or more descriptions that would make a perfect job description for a parent • For example: has to work long nights, for no moeny, ect. • The reason I am having you do this activity to make you aware that no one is perfect in life. Parenting is not easy, but child abuse should never happen even though the demands seem almost impossible.
