  2. The Election of 2000 SB Who: George W. Bush vs. Al Gore What: Election between Bush and Gore, in which Bush won the Electoral College vote, yet lost the popular vote. The election was very close, and caused a great conflict in the nation due to the deciding vote in Florida. Where: National election, however deciding factor in Florida When: November 7, 2000 Why: Bush won the Electoral College (271-266), but lost the popular vote (50,456,002-50,999,897). The deciding vote was made in Florida, as whoever won the state would win the election. Controversial due to the initial declaration of Gore winning the Electoral College that was retracted due to the increase of votes for Bush. The close margin caused a machine recount, which declared Bush the winner. Created outrage in democratic communities, and demanded recount. However, Supreme Court case Bush v. Gore declared it unconstitutional, declaring Bush winner.

Bush Economic PoliciesSY Who: The citizens of America, People of Afghanistan and Iraq What: Tax cuts, funding for the Afghanistan War and Iraq War, and less government involvement with businesses. Acts under George Bush reduced capital gain tax, and child tax credit and decreased tax rates. Overall, the debt grew larger, and spent around $3,000 billion Where: U.S., Afghanistan and Iraq When: During George W. Bush’s presidency (2001 - 2009) Why: George Bush tried to lower the national debt but the wars that were going on in Afghanistan and Iraq only made it worse. Click on the picture to view a video.
  5. George W. Bush Social Policies SY Who: People of U.S. What: Known for “No Child Left Behind”, “voluntary, student-led prayer” but not teacher-led and opposed funding stem cell research. Opposed Abortion, supported death penalty, opposed same-sex marriage When: During the presidency of George W. Bush(2001-2009)

Recession 2000-2003SY Who: People of U.S.A. and the countries that trade with U.S. What: The National debt of the country continued to increase and the GDP Where: Mainly in U.S. When: 2000- 2003 Why: People lost trust in the government because of the 9/11 attack and took their money out of the stock market causing the economy to worsen. The government budget was mainly focused on the wars and did not help the economy.
  7. Colin Powell RH Who: A four-star African American general that served as the secretaryof state under President George W. Bush. What: Managed America’s relationship with various countries againstthe War on Terrorism. Delivered speech (that failed) to U.N. forinternational support for the Invasion of Iraq, but received moresupport from home than European countries. Where: U.S. and Iraq When: During George Bush’s first term in office (2001 - 2004) Why: Rumors that Saddam Hussein was attempting to develop nuclear weaponsled to the Invasion of Iraq.
  8. 9/11 Terrorist Attacks AA Who: Islamic Terrorist Group Al Qaedacoordinated by Al Qaeda leader Osama BinLaden What: Four planes, two crash into each tower of the World Trade Center, one crashes into thePentagon, and one crashes in fields ofPennsylvania. Where: New York City, New York; Arlington County, Virginia; Shanksville, Pennsylvania When: 8:45 -10 AM September 11th, 2001 Why: Mainly because of Al Qaeda’s dislike towards American involvement in the MiddleEast, Al Qaeda’s way of “pushing away”America’s involvement in the Middle East.

Al Qaeda AA Who: Global militant Islamist organization founded by Osama Bin Laden and Abdullah Azzam What: Al Qaeda attacks civilian and military targets in all countries, usually consisted of many who believed in Sunni Islamism and Takfirism.Many attacks on sites or civilianareas consist of suicide bombers, large bombs, and advanced weaponry. Where: Spread amongst many countries in the Middle East:Afghanistan, Iraq, Maghreb, Pakistan,Syria, and Yemen. When: August 1988 to late 1989 Why: Desired a complete break from all foreign influences, especially Western, and create a newIslamic State in which would be led by a leader influenced by Mohammed.

War on Terror AA Who: The United States of America and Other NATO Nations vs. Al Qaeda and other militantgroups What: The collective effort of nations around the world to eradicate terrorist groups like Al Qaedaand other militant groups to increase international security. Where: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Iraq, etc. When: October 7th, 2001 - Present Day Included within the War on Terror: Conflicts in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, etc.
  13. War in AfghanistanSD Who: NATO and the Northern Alliance such as the US, Great Britain, and Germany. What:NATO troops are battling Al-Qaeda fighters and the Taliban insurgency Where: Afghanistan, in the tribal regions and across the Afghan-Pakistani border When: Post 9/11, troops were sent on the 7th of October, 2oo1 Why: The US was after Al-Qaeda’s safe haven in Afghanistan, whichwas controlled by the Taliban, Pre 9/11

The TalibanSD Who: Mulla Mohammad Omar was the spiritual leader of the Taliban and acted as its founder andhead of state What: An Islamic group that imposed Sharia Law and brutal treatment of women throughoutAfghanistan Where: Throughout Afghanistan, the Taliban lead a brutal occupation following an insurgencyafter US liberation of Afghanistan. When: 1996-2001, acted as the government in Afghanistan. 2001-present continues an insurgency Why: To impose strict islamic beliefs and the ideas of Sharia Law on Afghanistan. Sharia Law is thestrict interpretation of Islam on daily activities, such as clothing, prayer, marriage. Offenders areoften punished with death. Click on the picture to view a video.
  15. USA Patriot Act RH Who: President George W. Bush What: United and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism. Eased the process for law enforcement to collect data on suspected terrorists. Some parts were supposed to expire but most were extended.   16. Guantanamo Bay AA Who: Created by the United States of America What: Maximum Detention Facility and Prison for high priority prisoners, high danger prisoners, and war criminals. Major leaders detained from the War on Terror would go here. Where: Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba When: January 2002 Why: Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld claimed the prison is designed to accompany “extraordinarily dangerous prisoners, to interrogate prisoners in an optimal setting, and to prosecute prisoners for war crimes”

Moscow Theatre TakeoverRH Who: Movsar Barayev (as well as 40 to 50 other terrorists), 850 hostages, Russian Alpha Group What: Hostages were taken at the theater for two and a half days by about fifty Chechens. In order to stop the hostage situation, the Russian Alpha Group placed an unknown gas within the ventilation system that caused everyone inside to pass out. All of the terrorists were captured in the raid of the theater, but 133 hostages also died from the gas. Where: Dubrovka Theater, Moscow, Russia When: October 22, 2002 Why: The terrorists were Islamic Chechens who demanded that the Russians end the Second Chechen War by removing their troops.

What: Aimed to counteract terrorism within the U.S. Combined over twenty government agencies and maintained a color-coded warning arrangement in case of terrorist attacks. Where: At home in the U.S. When: Officially signed on November 25, 2002 Why: Was a response to 9/11 attack. Created to defend against any acts of terrorism within the United States.

Capture of Saddam HusseinSD Who: Saddam Hussein, the 1st Brigade Combat Team, and Task Force 121 What: Operation Red Dawn created for the purpose of capturing Iraqi president Saddam Hussein Where: Outside the town of ad-Dawr, the suspected hiding spots were codenamed “Wolverine 1” and “Wolverine 2” When: December 13, 2003 was the date of Hussein’s capture Why: Saddam had a tyrannical grip over Iraq, had possession of chemical weapons for a time, was found with a rifle and $750,000 in cash

Chechnya School MassacreRH Who: Chechen terrorists, 1,100 Russian hostages, Russian military forces What: On the first day of school, Chechen terrorists sent by warlord Shamil Basayev, violently forced students and faculty into a Cafeteria in School Number One. The hostages were held in the hot room with no food and water for three days. On the last day, Russian forces seized the school and saved the lives of many of the hostages. However, 334 people were killed in the situation. Where: Beslan, Russia When: September 1st - 4th, 2004 Why: Shamil Basayev demanded the recognition of Chechnya as an independant country.
  22. Condoleeza RiceRH Who: Political Science professor at Stanford University that served as the Secretary of State/ National Security Advisor under President Bush. What: Organized new security policy against domestic terrorism. She believed Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, and was an advocate for the removal of Saddam Hussein.Caused controversy when she was discovered to approve the use of waterboarding. Where: The U.S. and Iraq. When: 2005-2009 Why: In response to 9/11 and the possibility that Saddam Hussein could develop nuclear weapons.

Election of Antonio Villaraigosa SB Who: Antonio Villaraigosa, Mayor of Los Angeles, former member of California State Assembly (Democrat) What: Attempted becoming mayor of L.A. in 2001, but lost to James Hahn; reran in 2005 and won Where: Los Angeles, California When: Became mayor on July 1, 2005, and ended his term on July 1, 2013 Why: Was deemed a very influential man, as he was considered one of the “most influential Hispanics in America” by Time Magazine; attempted to improve L.A.’s traffic situation by setting more roadway laws, improved public safety, increased gun control, supported animal rights, increased taxes, and created energy and environmental programs. Moreover, Villaraigosa attempted to help the schools of L.A. by giving the government more control. However, many were opposed to his weak, unsupportive, policies causing a great failure to him. Started of strong, but ended weakly due to high ambitions.

Immigration and Population Change SB Who: Overall population of U.S., specifically minority groups What: General increase in minority groups, increase of illegal immigrants, more businesses in South due to increase of population; decade with greatest amount of population increase Where: United States of America When: In the 2000s Why: Many were coming to America in hope for jobs, religious freedom (tensions arising in Middle East) -Significant due to the increase in minorities, specifically the Hispanic population (nearly doubled). Large increase in Asian populations as well, diversifying America even further. However, many problems arose due to the lack of jobs and recessions.

Hurricane KatrinaAA Who: Inhabitants of the Bahamas, Florida, Cuba, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama were affected What: Category 5 Hurricane (remarkably one of the most deadly and most powerful hurricanes of the time) made landfall and caused over 81 billion dollars in property damage for the United States. Death of Saddam HusseinSD Who: Former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein was captured by US Special Operations Forces What:Hussein was sentenced to death by hanging from the Iraqi Special Tribunal Where: Was found near his hometown in Tikrit and was held at Camp Cropper When: Executed on the 31 of December, 2006 by hanging Why: Hussein was charged with crimes against humanity for killing hundreds of Shi’ite Muslims in Dujail.
