What NJHS Is . . • A co-curricular activity that supports the educational goals of the school • An opportunity to involve members in significant learning experiences, especially in the area of service • Inclusive-- open to all students who meet the five established criteria which are academics, leadership, service, character and citizenship
What NJHS Is Not . . . • Elitist, where special privileges are granted • An honor roll • A “junior” program of NHS • A program structured entirely from a national organization
Selection • Must be a sixth, seventh, or eighth grader • Must have ONLY As/Bs and 1s/2s for Term 1 and Term 2 • Selection of members is made by majority vote of the Faculty Council • Selection procedure shall be determined by the Faculty Council and shall be consistent with the rules and regulations of the NJHS. • Membership is by invitation, not application
Selection (cont’d) • Academically eligible students are asked to complete a form regarding service, leadership and citizenship activities • Forms are not applications for membership • A review of information gathered does not guarantee selection. • Membership is an honor bestowed by the Faculty Council based upon careful consideration of the information provided
What is the Faculty Council? • 5 voting members appointed annually by the principal • No principal or assistant principal may be included on the Faculty Council • Faculty Council meets at least once per year to decide member selection, warnings and dismissal.
LEADERSHIP POSITIONS • List all elected or appointed leadership positions or other positions of responsibility held in school, community, or work activities. • officer of student government • class representative for student government • class officer • school club officer or publication major officer: e.g. editor or co-editor • Captain of any athletic team.
SERVICE ACTIVITIES • List service activities in which you have participated. • This can be individual or groups service projects done either in or out of school. • Please ask an adult supervisor who can verify your participation sign on the appropriate line. • Also list the estimated number of hours • club member • member of standing committee of student government • member of athletic team, manager, scorekeeper • participant in school dramatic or choral production • membership in church or community service group • member of recognized school committee
OTHER STUDENT ACTIVITIES • List all other school-based activities (not noted above) in which you have participated in school. • Scouts • Teams • Musical groups • clubs outside of school • volunteer groups
