Rome Notes 2. The Beginning of Rome. How did Rome Begin?. Two different legends Most famous is the story of Romulus and Remus. R and R were twin brothers and as babies they were abandoned by their mother on the Tiber River.

  2. How did Rome Begin? • Two different legends • Most famous is the story of Romulus and Remus. • R and R were twin brothers and as babies they were abandoned by their mother on the Tiber River. • Abandoned because an evil man overthrew his brother who was king so he could become king.

  3. Romulus and Remus Cont. • Evil king ordered R and R to be killed (they were his nephews) so that they could not overthrow him and reclaim the throne • Bloody Coux- over take the throne by force and kill the king or ruler. • Twins were placed in a basket and cast upon the Tiber River. The basket drifted to shore and was found by a female wolf. • The wolf decided to protect the 2 boys.

  4. Romulus and Remus Cont. • Later a Shepard found the two boys and he and his wife raised them. The Shepard named them Romulus and Remus. • As teenagers they discover their true identity and overthrow their uncle and kill him. • 753 BC they begin Rome • Brothers fight a lot • Remus makes fun of his brother’s wall around the city. Romulus kills him.

  5. Romulus and Remus Cont. • Romulus then becomes king and names Rome after himself. • Quote: “It’s heaven’s will that my Rome shall be the capital of the world.”- Romulus

Second Legend • Traced back even farther than the R and R legend. • Aeneid- story of Aeneas written by Virgil • Aeneas was a Trojan hero • Sailed the Mediterranean sea with a group of followers after the Greeks captured Troy • Had tons of adventures and eventually landed at the mouth of the Tiber River.

  7. Aeneas Cont. • Lots of wars then Aeneas married the local king’s daughter. • After this Aeneas united the Trojans and the Latin people of the area • Aeneas then became the founder of Rome

Rome’s Beginning • After 800 BC other people join Rome and Italy • One of the groups of people were the Greeks- they went to south Italy and Sicily • Between 750 BC and 550 BC Greeks expanded into all of Italy and Sicily • Romans learned or adapted the following from the Greeks: • Growing olives and grapes • Greek Alphabet • Greek architecture, sculpture, and literature • Religion- had their own gods and goddesses

  9. Etruscans • Most of Roman influence comes from the Etruscans • Lived north of Rome in Etruria • Took control of Rome around 650 BC • Were skilled metal workers • Become wealthy from mining and trading • Forced enslaved people to do hard labor while they made their lives more comfortable

Etruscans Cont. • On their tomb paintings there were feasting, dancing, music, festivals, and sports • Paintings also depicted bloody battle scenes • Turned Rome into more of a strong advanced military city • Had straw huts and brick and wooded homes • Laid out roads, temples, and markets around a central place in Rome • Came up with togas • Built the very first sewer system

  11. Etruscans Cont. • Ruled for more than 100 years • The main ruling family was the Tarquins. • Tarquins were really cruel and mean to people • 509 BC Roman people rebelled and overthrew the Tarquins and set up a Republic
