1.) I can describe how democracy grew under Pericles. 1. The time in Athens from 460 B.C. – 429 B.C. is known as The Age of Pericles. 2. He had three goals: 1. strengthen democracy, 2. expand the empire, and 3. beautify Athens. 3. He changed the balance of power between the rich and the poor. 4. He increased the number of paid officials so the poor could participate in the government. 5. Due to these changes, Pericles helped democracy grow in Athens. 6. Athens had a direct democracy.
2.) I can explain how Pericles expanded the wealth and power of Athens. • Athens helped establish the Delian League in order to have mutual protection for all city-states. • Pericles used money from the Delian League to build a strong navy. • Due to the superior navy, Athens took over leadership of the Delian League and moved the treasury to Athens. • The transfer of the treasury strengthened Athens power.
3.) I can summarize Pericles’ beautification program in Athens. • Athens was destroyed by Persia during the Persian War. • Pericles used money from the Delian League to buy gold, ivory, and marble to create sculptures and build beautiful buildings. • The Parthenon was built to honor Athena. • He also used money to pay for people to work on these projects.
