Centre for Tribals and Rural Development Trust • The CTRD is a non-governmental organisation, which was founded in 1988 by Mr. RS Ranganathen and is registered under the Indian Trust Act of the state Tamil Nadu • We are located in the Nilgiri District near to the tri-cross of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka
CTRDOur Working Area • After Africa, India has the largest number of primitive tribal groups (PTGs) in the world. Our working area is the Nilgiri biosphere. In this area live 6 of the 75 PTGs of India • In the last decades the face of the Nilgiris changed rapidly. The former nature and forest area was nearly complete destroyed by the extrem tea-cultivation and following settlement of non-tribal groups
CTRDWho We Help • A PTG is defined as a group of individuals with a “pre-agricultural state of technology, a stagnant or declining population, extremly low literacy rates and a subsistence level of economy” • We work with 3 of the 6 primitive tribal groups of this area, whose living-condtitions changed enormous, the Paniyan, Kurumban and Kattunayakkan. The former from the nature living tribal groups struggled with these changes, before we started to support them • We also support the poor rural population in the local area

CTRDOur Vision • Our vision is to help tribal and rural communities to become empowered and self-sufficent, with improved living conditions that do not damage their cultural and environmental identity • We believe that the key to reach this development is to educate and help the communities to face their major issues, so that they can help themselves on their own in the future
CTRDHousing Project • The traditional tribal houses are built of materials of the forests and nature. The houses must be rebuild twice a year, before and after the monsoon. This is now not longer possible, because of the huge deforestation many materials are missing and the houses collapse • We have been working to provide tribal villages with save and reliable housing that will protect for generations to come • The project must be sustainable. That is why we involve the communities in every step and train them to construct and maintain their homes themselves
CTRD - RaleighBiogas Project • Since 2009 we have been promoting renewable energy sources by providing tribal and non-tribal families with biogas units. These units replace traditional open fires, remove health and safety risks and prevent the release of CO² • Two cows fuel the biogas units and provide milk and fertilizer as well • This grants income generation, a better livelihood and is environmental sustainable
CTRD - RaleighSanitation Project • Most of the tribal communities have no access to toilets and showers. They are forced to practice open air defecation, which brings an enormous amount of health risks • The people are threatened by wildlife and it damages the dignity of women and children • To fight these problems we built stand-alone sanitation units, which provide a safe and private area for defecation
CTRDHealth Projects • Since our foundation we have started health awarness programmes in the tribal communities to make them recognize the advantages of modern medicine • We own a 20 bedded hospital with pharmacy, laboratory and maternity care in Devala • Special health camps are provided for the poor people of the Gudalur block
CTRD Eye health and differently able projects • In coperation with “SIGHT SAVERS” we care about the eye health in three blocks of the Nilgiri District • We offer projects that help differently abled and blind people to migrate into society and give them access to facilities and organizations, which care about their special needs
CTRDWomen Empowerment Project • In 2001 we started our self-help-group project. By this we strengthen women empowerment in our district • We have already started over 1200 SHGs and provide skill oriented and capacity building trainings. The groups also are credit linked to several banks • This gives women a support network, more self-confidence and help them to take a more decisive role in family and in the society
CTRDLivelihood Projects • In patnership with “CARE India” we implemented the “LIFE project” for tribal small tea growers • The “LIVE project” aims for a providing technical knowledge and inputs for the tribal farmers to obtain bettere prices for their produce • Nine tribal tea producer associations have been founded and registered
CTRDMicro Pension Project • Since 2010 in partnership with UTI and IIMPS we have been providing micro pension services to people for unorganized sectors • Low contributions gives them a long term pension when they are retired. This enables them to live their life with dignity in their old age
CTRDHome Project • The CTRD Home for orphans and oldage people was founded in 2012 • We provide orphan children a place to live a safe and good childhood and a possibility to go to school. The children do activities and get trainings like hygiene lessons and help for school • Furthermore we offer oldage people a place to grow old in dignity
CTRDEducation Projects • Village level preparatory schools for tribal children in the age of 4 to 6 helps to create and increase the interest in education • Villiage evening coaching to support tribal students through their studies • The Tribal Children Education Sponsorship Programme
Tribal Children Education Sponsorship Programme • The TCESP was founded in 2012 by two German volunteers. They dealt with the problems of lack of education and early breakup of school in tribal communities • The TCESP can solve this problems and give the children the possibility to get an education and make their dreams come true
CTRD - TCESP The Problem • The average income of tribal communities is about 2000 INR (30 Euros) per month. That is nearly enough to live, but it is not possible to finance the children their school fees, materials, uniforms and proper nutrition • The lack of education is leading to ignorance and low-levels of literacy and makes it imopssible to break the circle of poverty
CTRD - TCESPHow Does It Work • The two volunteers recognized that with a little donation of 100 Euros per year that can be changed • Our volunteers and staff vistited several children and have chosen 30. They looked for the children with the greatest interest in school and the most need of financial support
