  1. EROSION

  2. WHAT IS EROSION? During erosion, soil or rocks are carried away to a new place by moving water.

  3. What are the natural things that causes erosion? • Moving water takes soil and rocks to other places • The water also rubs on the rocks and makes them smooth • Ocean waves beats on rocks and slowly breaks them into tiny pieces to make sand. (this takes millions of years!)

  4. What are the natural things that causes erosion? • Too much rain can make soil and rocks slide down a slope(Landslide) • Floods happen when too much rain falls. The soil cannot absorb the extra water.

  5. Erosion caused by Humans Deforestation Deforestation is cutting down trees. This can be done by logging or burning forests and is a way in which humans cause erosion. Removal of the trees and plants covering the ground causes the soil to erode because it is not protected against wind and water. Erosion also occurs because there are no tree roots to soak up the water when it rains. When unprotected, topsoil can be blown or washed away. The loss of topsoil destroys the ability for the land to grow new trees and plants.

  6. Erosion caused by Humans Watering • Watering gardens and lawns also causes erosion. When using a garden hose or an sprinkler system, the water hits the ground with enough force to cause the soil to erode. Overwatering will also cause soil erosion. To stop erosion in your yard, you must protect the topsoil layer. To do this, you should plant trees and other plants in your yard because the roots of the plants and trees will soak up the water.

  7. Erosion caused by Humans Agriculture • Agriculture (farming) is the main way humans cause soil erosion. When crops are planted in the ground, the topsoil is shifted, which causes erosion. The loose topsoil is then moved by wind or water to nearby streams and bodies of water. When soil is moved into a stream or river, it can change the path of the stream or river over time. Farmers can help to prevent erosion by using a ground cover to keep soil from being moved. Farmers can also use special equipment to plant crops that does not involve tilling the soil (turning it over).

  8. What Can We Do TO Stop Erosion? • Plant more trees when they are cut down • Don’t over water your grass or lawn • Framers should use something to cover the topsoil when they plant crops • Built barriers that prevent flooding (Dykes)
