  1. Praying for our Gospel Meeting

  2. Introduction Next week (a week from Thursday) begins our gospel meeting. While it’s great that we have planned and prepared for this meeting let us not forget the importance of praying for it. In this sermon we will give four things that we should be praying for in our gospel meeting effort using the acronym PRAY.

  3. Pray for the Preacher Michael Wallace The apostle Paul asked for prayers many times. (Rom. 15:30; Heb. 13:18; 1 Thess. 5:25) Michael Wallace has preached the truth here before and I am convinced he will do so again but he still needs our prayers. Pray that he might preach with boldness, clarity, and simplicity. (Eph. 6:19; 2 Cor. 3:12) He has a great responsibility but we can also help him through our daily prayers as the Corinthians did for Paul. (2 Cor. 1:11)

  4. Pray for Receptive Hearts In the parable of the Sower, the seed is the word of God and when it is planted in good and honest hearts it will bear fruit (Luke 8:15). The Bereans had receptive hearts (Acts 17:11). “But Steve, I’ve tried and no one has ever come. Many don’t want to hear, so I quit trying”. Have you been diligent about praying that God would open doors for the word (Col. 4:2-6)? Our labor is never in vain in the Lord’s service. (1 Cor. 15:58; Gal. 6:9-10)

  5. Pray for Receptive Hearts I realize there is a point with some that you have to make a judgment as to when to shake the dust off your feet and not cast your pearls before swine (Matt. 7:6; 10:14). But we need to continue to pray fervently that the word of God will spread rapidly in receptive hearts (2 Thess. 3:1). Jesus said that the fields were white for harvest and the same is true today (John 4:35). Are you praying for receptive hearts?

  6. Pray for Good Attendance We are inviting everyone in Brenham and the surrounding areas to hear the soul saving gospel next week. (Personal invitations, door to door, radio, newspaper, etc.) How sad it would be it we forsook the assembling of ourselves together (Heb. 10:25) and the one we invited decided to come? There are several brethren from out of town that are planning from long distances to encourage us in our meeting. Let’s be here!

  7. Pray for a Good Crop Yielding We are praying that good and honest hearts will respond in obedience to the truth but we also should pray that we grow spiritually as a result of this meeting. "Other seeds fell into the good soil, and as they grew up and increased, they yielded a crop and produced thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold“ (Mark 4:8) The apostle Paul prayed for the Colossians that they might bear fruit in every good work. (Colossians 1:10)

  8. Pray for a Good Crop Yielding If you are here, paying attention to God’s word, and putting into practice the things you learn, you will grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18). It will help you to not be deceived by the errors of ungodly men (2 Peter 3:16-17). It will help you to discern good from evil rather than digressing to infancy again (He. 5:12-14) You will reap what you have sown (Gal. 6:7-8).

  9. Conclusion If you are a member and you’re willfully absent, all your prayers will not help our gospel meeting effort. But if we are all here praying that God will bless Michael Wallace in his preaching the truth, we are praying for receptive hearts, good attendance, and a good crop yielding we will have a successful meeting. Our responsibility is to plant and water and God will give the increase. (1 Cor. 3:6) All things are ready come to the feast!
