  6. Chemical properties • It doesn’t react with cold water or cold acids. • It does dissolve in some hot acids.

  7. Uses of Antimony Antimony is finding use in semiconductor technology for making infrared detectors, diodes, and hall effect devices.

  8. History Antimony was recognized in compounds by the ancients and was known as a metal at the beginning of the 17th century and possibly much earlier.

  9. Isotopes of antimony • The two antimony isotopes are used for the production of medical radioisotopes.

  10. Interesting facts • Small amounts of antimony can cause eye, skin, and lung irritation. • It often takes a trained mineralogist to tell the difference between arsenic, antimony, and stibarsen. • Swedish chemist Jons Jakob Berzelius gave antimony its symbol.
