  1. Aim#4:How to Understand the Line Element of Design? Do Now: In Mark Tobey’s “Geography of Phantasy”, What do you think is taking place within the artwork?

  2. Line Element of Design • A mark or a stroke long in proportion, made with a pen, pencil, tool on a surface (Often defined as a moving dot).

  3. Types of Lines • Outlines- Lines made by the edge of an object or its silhouette.

  4. Types of Lines • Contour Lines- Lines that describes an objects shape and the interior detail.

  5. Types of Lines • Gesture Lines- lines that displays movement and gestures of an active figure.

  6. Types of Lines • Cross Hatched Lines - lines placed at an angle crossing another to create shade

  8. McRayMagleby“Swan Poster” (Graphic Design) • Explain how are lines used within this design. • It shows how a few strokes of lines can be used to illustrate a swan on water. • The lines covey a feeling of simplicity & grace.

  9. Homework Assignment • Homework #3:Sketch out your Dream Bedroom on the Homework Worksheet using some of the lines we discussed in today’s lesson. TRY YOUR BEST! Please read the instructions CAREFULLY, and make sure you add all details ( and furniture) that are required into your design. Due-Thursday, Sept. 14

  11. Line Element Class Assignment Sketching an object: • You will choose one of the following objects (displayed on the slide) to sketch out on the worksheet. Please use some of the lines discussed today to help display details within your drawings.

  12. Mark Tobey’s “Geography of Phantasy” • The painting is all lines. • He drew with his brush, then repeated lines creating a complex pattern.

  13. What are the differences between the two pieces of art? Any piece show movements?
