  1. The Kingdom Zoo Group Project Essential Questions What characteristics are used to classify living things? How can the coordinate system help you to better understand other map systems?

  2. Task • Work with members of your zoo team to design and create a map of a zoo on a coordinate plane. • Each zoo will include the following Kingdoms: • Bacteria (combined kingdom for purposes of this activity) • Protist • Fungi • Animal • Plant

  3. Zoo Teams • Zoo teams will be assigned 6 team members. • Each member will have an assigned role. • Zookeeper • Kingdom Manager (1 for each Kingdom) • You will work both as a group and independently to complete this assigned task.

  4. Zoo Design • Using the grid paper provided, the zookeeper must label the origin and all numbers on the x and y axis. This will be your zoo’s “map”. • Create 5 kingdoms by cutting out 5 rectangles using the template provided. • Once cut out, all zoo team members should work together to identify the x , y coordinates for each of the zoo kingdoms. This is your zoo’s layout, so this step is important! • Identify the ordered pairs for each kingdom’s 4 corners.

  5. Zoo Design • Kingdom Managers will work independently at their desks to design his/her kingdom on the paper provided. Each kingdom should include: • Kingdom Name • Minimum of 2 living things that would be found in that kingdom’s zoo exhibit. For each, include: • Name • Illustration (include habitat ) • 2 characteristics that allow it to fit into that kingdom. • X, Y Coordinates of your Kingdom’s entrance. (This is in addition to the 4 corners coordinates mentioned previously)

  6. Zoo Design • Zookeepers will be working on the following as Kingdom Managers are designing their kingdom exhibits: • Directions for zoo-comers to visit each of the Kingdoms. (Ex: From the zoo entrance, travel 3 blocks east and 2 blocks north to the Animal Kingdom). • Walking Path between Kingdoms. • Zoo Kingdom Name and/or Signage throughout the zoo. • Quality inspection on Kingdom Manager’s exhibits.

  7. Zoo Design • Kingdom Managers will bring their exhibit designs to the Zookeeper once their designs are complete. • Glue onto the coordinate plane. • Assist Zookeeper or other Kingdom Managers with any unfinished work. Remember! All work must be neat, organized, and easy to read. Use your best handwriting and take your time.
