  3. Introduction We are a student-run charity Our ‘vision’ is to encourage students to make a difference in developing countries through overseas volunteering Two way cultural exchange

  5. Water and Sanitation based project consisting of 4 main parts • 1. Building a water tank for a primary school • 2. Protecting a water source within a village

  6. 3. WASH teaching 4. Fuel efficient stoves

  7. Project 7 weeks -1 week training with Oxford volunteers - 6 weeks on project • Work with Little Big Africa

  8. Living as a team of six in own house in the village

  20. Basics • NGO; Kirana Trust • Staying in Chikkaballapura, 2 hours from Bangalore • 6- 7 week placement

  21. Kirana Trust The Trust’s aims; Lift the neediest children from the urban slums Give food, shelter ( Brinn’s Nest) and an education to these children. Empower local communities by; non-formal education programmes women’s savings groups working with youth groups to break down caste prejudices, fight discrimination and improve health and welfare.

  22. Possible Projects • Health and sanitation education • Projects involving the women’s, men’s and youth groups in and around Chikkaballapura. • Teaching at Brinn’s Nest

  24. Finance Cheapest way to volunteer abroad! Each volunteer fundraises: £700 Global Vision International – 8 weeks, Kenya - £1300 Real Gap Experience – 8 weeks, Uganda - £1300 Last year over half of volunteers over fundraised. Deposit Details Admin Deadline

  25. Approximate Personal Costs Flights: £400 to £600 Insurance: £100 Visa: Uganda £30 Rwanda £0 Nepal £75 Immunizations up to £150 Travel before and after £0 to …..? Total Roughly £750 - £800 (Don’t panic grants are available!)

Fundraising • Fundraising is fun and a great way to get to know the people you will be going away with. • All the money fundraised in the name of BVDA must go towards the project • The running of BVDA is carried out voluntarily, thus ALL of the fundraising goes directly to funding the projects

  27. Fundraising What it DOES cover: Project materials Basic food and accommodation whilst on project What it DOES NOT cover: Flights Travel before / after project Insurance Vaccinations Beer/local spirits!

BVDA activities: Sponsored walk at Easter Street Collection Bar Crawl Collection Bag Packing Project groups: Club/band/live music nights Raffles Individual: Sponsored events Write to local organisations/companies Selling BARMY t-shirts Cake sales/events at home

  29. Commitment and Training To help you prepare for your project, we will provide the following: a twelve week training program (every Thursday) Teambuilding day in Ashton Court Group fundraising activities

  30. Training sessions include... Meeting the other volunteers First Aid training (compulsory) Learning about the country you will be visiting Support from your own project parent Experienced speakers/ former volunteers Workshops on development issues such as: Ethics Poverty Cultural sensitivity Teaching abroad Pre-departure guidance (inc. manual)

  31. Applying and Selection There are three stages to the application process: Application forms: By the end of this term! Selection Days: Saturday 9th January Sunday 10thJanuary Interviews: The first week back next term Decisions will be made by 19thJanuary 2010
