  4. Check It Out! Example 3 Multiply. c. (9 + r)(9 – r)

  5. Example 4: Problem-Solving Application Write a polynomial that represents the area of the yard around the pool shown below.

  6. Check It Out! Example 4 Write an expression that represents the area of the swimming pool.

  7. A builder uses parallelogram-shaped stones as decoration around a building’s windows. The stones come in many different sizes. Each stone has a base length of y inches and a height of (2y – 6) inches. Write a polynomial to describe the area of a stone. Then find the area of a stone that has a length of 6 units.

  8. A circular track is surrounded by a circular walkway. The radius of the track is m – 3 and the radius of the walkway is m + 4. Write a polynomial that represents the area of the walkway. (A = πr2)

  9. Gary installed a square island in his kitchen and he wants to trim the island out with tumblestone. The tumblestone will enclose an area that is 3 feet longer and 2 feet wider than the island. If Gary bought a total of 24 feet of tumblestone, what are the dimensions of the island?

  10. The Smiths want to cover their backyard with new grass. Their backyard is rectangular, with a length of 2x – 4 feet and a width of 3x – 9 feet. However, their rectangular swimming pool, along with its surrounding patio, has dimensions of x + 6 by x – 1 feet. What is the area of the region of the yard that they want to cover with new grass?
