  2. C Cite from the text A Your Answer E Explain how your citations support your answer. The A.C.E. Method

  3. Question: Did Priscilla make the right decision when she put Monk into the locker? Practice: With a partner, group select text evidence according to the position each supports.

  4. Yes No • “The gang he ran, which ran the school, was his collection agency.” • “Listen, there was a time when you couldn’t even go to the restroom around this school without a pass…sold by Monk Klutter.” • “Monk ran a tight ship.” • “Practically every guy in school could show you his scar.” “It snows all night, a blizzard. The whole town ices up. And school closes for a week.” “…Priscilla has Monk in a hammerlock. His neck’s popping like gunfire, and his head’s bowed under the immense weight of her forearm.” “Then Priscilla…says to the Kobra, ‘Who’s your leader, wimp?’” “Then, quicker than the eye, she brings the side of her enormous hand down in a chop that breaks the Kobra’s hold on Melvin’s throat.”

  5. Did Priscilla Make the right decision when she put Monk into the locker? Choose a piece of text evidence and compose your own answer. C Cite from the text A Your Answer A E Explain how your citations support your answer

  6. Priscilla did the right thing because she was giving Monk a taste of his own medicine. “practically every guy in school could show you his scar.” Everyone knew what it was like to be bullied and picked on by the Kobras. So when Monk came along trying to pick on Melvin, Priscilla was there to stick up for her friend. By putting Monk into a locker, she gives him a piece of his own medicine so that he feels the same as others who received “scars” from his gang.

  7. Put it all together Priscilla did the right thing because she was giving Monk a taste of his own medicine. As a result of Monk’s gang, “practically every guy in school could show you his scar.” Everyone knew what it was like to be bullied and picked on by the Kobras. So when Monk came along trying to pick on Melvin, Priscilla was there to stick up for her friend. By putting Monk into a locker, she gives him a piece of his own medicine so that he feels the same as others who received “scars” from his gang.

  11. In the selection, Anna is the most caring. She’s constantly living through “sleepless nights, unending pain, constant fatigue, difficulty breathing…and chemotherapy that makes [her] feel worse than the cancer does.” Yet, she always makes sure everyone around her is okay and moving. While fighting for her life, she makes sure her daughters and son are getting to where they need to go. She even “somehow always has a clean shirt ready for [her husband’s] work the next day.” She found ways not to dwell on her sickness and take care of her family. It takes an extraordinary person like Anna to “give them comfort” even when she is dying as we speak. Identify the A.C.E. Highlight each part with a different color, or identify each part on your own paper.

  12. In the 1700’s in America, religion separated the colonists by where they lived in town. Since transportation was not easy and there were no cars, “Naturally if you were a Presbyterian, you built your house over there (by the Presbyterian church).” Also attending church was very important for the colonists; it only makes sense that they would live near their church for easy commute. People knew your religion by where you lived. This was not done to segregate but out of convenience. Identify the A.C.E. Highlight each part with a different color.
