  2. Hazard Class 1  Explosives • Six divisions 1.1. Mass explosion hazard 1.2. Projectile hazard 1.3. Fire hazard 1.4. Significant blast hazard 1.5. Very insensitive explosives; blasting agents 1.6. Extremely insensitive detonators

  3. Hazard Class 2  Gases • Pressurized or liquefied • Compressed nitrogen and liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) are examples. • Product and container present hazards. • Three divisions 2.1. Flammable gases 2.2. Non-flammable, non-toxic compressed 2.3. Toxic by inhalation

  4. Hazard Class 3  Flammable and Combustible Liquids • Flammable liquids can ignite at room temperature. • Combustible liquids require some degree of preheating to ignite. • Rule 1  Eliminate ignition sources.

  5. Hazard Class 4  Flammable Solids • Three divisions 4.1. Flammable solids 4.2. Spontaneously combustible 4.3. Dangerous when wet

  6. Hazard Class 5  Oxidizers and Organic Peroxides • Two divisions 5.1. Oxidizers release oxygen, causing or enhancing combustion of other materials. With strong fuels, these can create conditions that lead to violentcombustion. 5.2. Organic peroxides are very unstable.

  7. Hazard Class 6 Toxic Materials and Infectious Substances • Two divisions 6.1. Toxic materials are severely irritating substances: tear gas, hydrocyanic acid, carbon tetrachloride. • 6.2. Infectious substances potentially cause human diseases such as Anthrax or disease of the blood and many body fluids.

  8. Hazard Class 7  Radioactive Materials • Emit ionizing radiation • Exposure does not always result in contamination. • Safety Rules: time, distance, and shielding • Shipped in specialized containers

Steps for Proper Use of the ERG To identify the material, find one of these: • Four-digit identification number on the orange panel or placard • Four-digit identification number on shipping papers or packaging • Name of material on shipping papers or packaging • A person involved with the material who knows its name

  13. Steps for Proper Use of the ERG • If you cannot obtain a number but can see a placard, find the placard in the Table of Placards and Initial Response Guides to Use on Scene. Then use the three-digit guide number next to the sample placard. • If you cannot find a placard, name, or ID number, and you believe an incident involves a hazardous material, use Guide Page number 111 until you obtain further information.

  14. Steps for Proper Use of the ERG Look up the Guide Page number in either the yellow-bordered numerical index or the blue-bordered alphabetical index

Steps for Proper Use of the ERG • A P next to the Guide Page number indicates the material may undergo violent polymerization if subjected to heat or contamination. • If the index entry is highlighted, look for its ID number and name in the Table of Initial Isolation and Protective Action Distances (green-bordered pages). Immediately begin protective actions.
