What Is a Lightning Rod What Does It Do? • A lightning rod is a device that makes lightning not touch the ground because it could damage structures, trees, people, and animals. • The lightning rod is made of metal and attracts electricity. When the lightning hits the rod it goes through a wire and touches the ground and discharges safely.

  4. What causes thunder and lightning? • Lightning is a burst of light created by electric discharges. • Thunder is created by a rapid expansion in the air. Thunder is also produced by a deep noise by a lighting strike.
