  3. What are typical stereotypes about old people and sex?

  4. Stereotypes • Death by sex (heart attack). • Dirty old men. • Used up (too much sex in youth).

  5. Realities: Normal • Normal physical and physiological changes do not cause sexual problems. • Longer time to erection. • Less semen. • Longer refractory period. • In men, desire declines minimally. • Amount of sexual activity does decrease.

  6. Realities: Normal • Testosterone decreases slightly (1% per year after 25). • Lower capacity for erotic imagery in older men.

  7. Realities: Positives • Male can maintain love making longer. • Old men still fertile (60% in 70’s). • Men do not lose capacity for erections.

  8. Male Issue • Erectile dysfunction (25% or more of sexual encounters). • 5-10% seek help.

  9. Male Fixes • Get regular- sexual activity. • More stimulation (manual or oral). • Viagra (67% effective). • Vacuum devices. • Penile Implants. • Have sex in the morning.

  10. Female Issue • Vagina changes: Narrower, shorter, and less elastic. • Vagina changes: Dryness. • Inability to achieve orgasm.

  11. Female Fixes • Get regular- sexual activity. • Estrogen replacement (lubrication). • Testosterone therapy (desire). • Use lubrication. • Retrain emotional attitudes.

  12. Roadblocks • Children. • Diseases & disabilities. • Surgery (+/-). • Alcohol & Tobacco. • Medications (#1 for men). • Psychological issues. • Self fulfilling prophecies.
