Lack an understanding of New Testament love? • Lev. 19:18 ~ You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord. Psalms Prov. 24:17 ~ Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles… 35-37

  3. Were they in the flesh? • The Psalms are not historical narratives (e.g. 2 Sam. 1) but lyrical poetry Psalms 35-37

  4. Not calling for doom but predicting it? • Most Hebrew scholars say the grammar does not allow for this Psalms 35-37

  5. Use of hyperbole (purposeful exaggeration for effect) is common • Ps. 6:6 ~ I am weary with my groaning; • All night I make my bed swim; • I drench my couch with my tears. Psalms 35-37

  6. Lack of personal vendetta is common element • Ps. 109:16-18 ~ 16 Because he did not remember to show mercy, • But persecuted the poor and needy man, • That he might even slay the broken in heart. • 17 As he loved cursing, so let it come to him; • As he did not delight in blessing, so let it be far from him. • 18 As he clothed himself with cursing as with his garment, • So let it enter his body like water, • And like oil into his bones. Psalms 35-37

  7. Imprecations are not foreign to the New Testament • Jesus pronounced "Woes" on Bethsaida, Chorazin and Capernaum (Matt. 11:20-24) Psalms • And the scribes and the Pharisees (Matt. 23:13-29) • 1 Cor. 16:22 ~ If anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed … (anathema) 35-37

Rev. 10:8-10 ~ 8 Then the voice which I heard from heaven spoke to me again and said, “Go, take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the earth.” 9 So I went to the angel and said to him, “Give me the little book.” And he said to me, “Take and eat it; and it will make your stomach bitter, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.” 10 Then I took the little book out of the angel’s hand and ate it, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth. But when I had eaten it, my stomach became bitter. Psalms 35-37
