  2. Roosevelt to Taft • Roosevelt announced in 1908 he wouldn’t run again • He supported and promoted William Howard Taft to carry on his work • Taft was elected, mostly due to Roosevelt’s recommendation and support from the public

  3. Taft • Roosevelt believed Taft would carry on his work • Big business leaders liked him more than Roosevelt because he wasn’t as strict • Not an activist president; poor public speaker; didn’t respond to public opinion • Wasn’t very well liked

  4. Taft Criticism • Most progressives disliked Taft • Thought he was too “pro business” • Passed the Payne-Aldrich Tariff but no one liked it because it raised many tariffs • Fired Gifford Pinchot angering many

  5. Roosevelt and New Nationalism • Taft’s failure as a president looked bad on Roosevelt who had supported him • Roosevelt set out New Nationalism as a new plan for government • Strong executive • More business regulations • Social welfare measures

Roosevelt runs against Taft • Roosevelt went up against Taft in the primary elections for the Republican nomination • Won all direct primary states due to popularity; but Taft and his supporters controlled the convention and he won the Republican nomination • Roosevelt created a new, party known as the Progressive Party and nicknamed Bull Moose Party

Election of 1912 • Taft ran for Republican • Roosevelt ran for Bull Moose • Woodrow Wilson ran as a Democrat • New Freedom: Wilson’s platform; believed in busting monopolies to protect free competition; new format for Democrats who had been pro-business *Wilson wins because of the split in votes for Taft and Roosevelt

Wilson in Office • First Democrat to be elected in 20 years • Some found him to be odd • Brought many southern politicians into office with him which unnerved some • First year in office he got Congress to pass: • Underwood Tariff Act: lowest tariffs in many years • Sixteenth Amendment: federal income tax; at first was quite low and has grown over time

Wilson Reforms Banks & Business • Got the Federal Reserve Act passed which created the system of public and private banks that help manage the economy • Clayton Antitrust Act: strengthened antitrust laws and protected labor unions right to bargain • Federal Trade Commission: examines company records and investigates business practices

Wilson’s Social Policy • Wilson wasn’t a supporter of women’s suffrage because he believed it was up to states to decide • Keating-Own Child Labor Act: supported this act that kept companies from shipping their products across state lines if they employed children under the age of 14 • Was overturned by the Supreme Court

  11. Wilson’s Social Policy Continued • Backed the Adamson Act: limited workday to 8 hours on railroads • Supported the Federal Farm Loan Act that made it easier for farmers to get credit and invest in their businesses
