Sustainability Issues • Impaired water, air and soil quality poses a threat to human health, requiring concerted research to provide imminent solutions • Depletion of natural resources jeopardizes the future growth of industry, necessitating continuous R&D to develop clean and renewable energy and materials • Industrial activity and global warming cause adverse effects on land, needing research and practice to remediate, re-plan and re-use the affected areas • Sustainability problems are universal, but their characteristics and solutions are unique for each country or region, hence the need for local research and application which can be shared with neighboring countries/regions 3

Key Research Results (I) • At regional level • Toxins study in aquatic environment - Chairing International Water Association’s Specialty Group on “Off-Flavors in the Aquatic Environment” • ( T. F. Lin) • Green fuel oil Production - Developed an integrated technology for Green Emulsified Fuel Oil with a 14-25% energy saving (W. J. Lee et al. ) • Establishedan innovative and integrated feedstock technology leading to efficient and cost-effective pre-treatment or hydrolysis of biomass feedstock and organic waste; design and fabricate a novel photo-bioreactor achieving effective photosynthesis resulting in high-efficiency CO2 utilization and high bio-energy yield. (J. S. Chang et al.) • Developed Systematic environmental molecular biotechnology (Bioaugmentation, Biostimulation, Biomonitoring, Bioremediation) and assembled a system for ex-situ TPH bioremediation (S. S. Chenget al.) • Operated Integrated laboratory waste treatment achieving “zero waste” – the only one in Asia 17

  18. Key Research Results – (II) • At local level • Developing proteomics techniques to identify lung cancer metastasis (P. C. Liao et al. ) • Applied research results on value-added resource recycling to produce industry-grade materials, winning MoEA 2007 “Industry Contribution Award” (H. P. Wang et al.) • Carrying out integrated research on contaminated site remediationand reuse - the only integrated multidiscipline platform for site clean-up (C. C. Chao et al. ) • Undertaking“CPDC An-Shun Site Remediation” Project - serving as an authoritative advisor for Tainan City Government, with expertise in engineering, risk, communication and planning (C. C. Chao et.al.) 18

Laboratory Waste Treatment Plant • Funded by Ministry of Education • Majorbreakthroughs • The integratedtreatment processes • High efficiency, low emission,wastewater recycling,and energy recovery • Achievements • A sound service to all levels of school in Taiwan (treated > 2,370 tonnes lab waste) • Developed technologies to enhance the treatment as well as the value of recovered products • ExpectedBenefits • Delivering technologies to help Taiwan resolve difficult MSW incinerator ash problems 19

Industrial Cooperation • Within a period of 5 years, awarded 34 patents and conducted 13 technology transfers • Commercialized technologies included heavy metal recovery from ash residues and sludge, in-situ bio-remediation, etc. • Successfully executed 51 service projects with a total value of NT$ 160.3 million (US$ 5.3 million); 3 with > NT$ 10 million (US$ 330,000) in 2009. • Clientsincluded China Steel, China Hi-Ment, Chinese Petroleum, CPDC, Chi-Mei Optoelectronics, EPA, CoA, DoH, MoEA, WRA, Tainan City Government, Ministry of Education, Industrial Development Bureau, etc. 20

Mid- and Long-Term Plan of SERC • 5-Year from Now • To be a self-sufficient and independent research organization within NCKU, playing a leading role in Taiwan’s sustainable environment R&D, and acting as an influential partner to Government and industries in policy advice, technical support, program execution, technology implementation, and integrated service • To establish SERC as a key Asia regional center for trans-boundary cooperative R&Ds, policy advice and technical service • 10-Year from Now • To be an important world-level R&D and training center on sustainable environment, with funding from domestic and international sources, respecting strategic planning, innovative research, technology commercialization, and social service 25
