  1. 2.1 Factors and Multiples

  2. 2.1 Objectives • To identify all the factors of a given number • To understand and distinguish prime and composite numbers • To find prime factorizations • To identify multiples • To find common and GCFs, and common and LCMs • To see how factors and multiples are related

  3. Terms • Factor- a factor of a whole number is another whole number that divides into it without a remainder. • Factor Pair- a factor pair for a number is two factors whose product equals that number. • Composite Number- a whole number greater than 1 with more than two factors. • Prime Number- a whole number greater than 1 with only two factors, 1 and itself.

  4. Terms cont… • Prime Factorization- when you write a composite number as a product of prime numbers, using a factor tree. • Common Factor- a common factor of two or more numbers is a number that is a factor for all the numbers. • Greatest Common Factor- (GCF) the GCF of two or more numbers is the greatest of their common factors. • Relatively Prime- if the only common factor of two or more numbers is 1.

  5. Terms cont… • Multiple- a multiple of a whole number is the product of that number and another whole number. • Common Multiple- a common multiple of a set of numbers is a multiple of all the numbers • Least Common Multiple- (LCM) is the smallest of the non-zero multiples.

  6. Factors • List them… • Use the divisibility rules to help. What are the factors of 54?

  7. Multiples • List them What are some multiples of 7?

  8. GCF and LCM (LCD) • List them • Step method • Prime Factorization Find the GCF and LCM of: 54 and 90

  9. Prime Factorization • Prime vs Composite Numbers • Factor Tree Find the GCF and LCM of: and
