  2. Point of View • The perspective of the narrative voice • 1st person, 3rd person limited, 3rd person omniscient

  3. Mood • The atmosphere that pervades a literary work evoking emotion

  4. Imagery • The use of pictures or descriptions to visualize a mood or character

  5. Characterization • Direct comments about a character’s personality or nature through the voice of narration • Describes the character’s physical appearance • The character’s own thoughts, speech, and actions • Pertinent thoughts, speech, and actions of other characters

  6. Setting • The time and place of the novel

  7. Theme • An underlying message about life or human nature that a writer wants the reader to understand. • Implicit vs. Explicit • Implicit: implied theme • Explicit: explicitly stated theme

  8. Symbol • Something that stands for something else

  9. Diction • Word choice and order

  10. Figurative Language • Language that contains or uses figures of speech (i.e. metaphors, similes, etc.)

  11. Irony • Discrepancy between what is said and what is meant

  12. Paradox • A statement whose two parts seem contradictory yet make sense with more thought

  13. Sarcasm • Satirical or ironical wit

  14. Foreshadowing • A warning or indication of a future event

  15. Flashback • Scene in a novel set earlier in the plot
