Introduction – Pete Stevenson • Have been in IT for 26 years • Started as a Trainee technical programmer in 1980 • Quickly moved into Storage Management • Stayed in Storage Management until 2005 • Chair of GSE UK Storage working group for 6 years during 1990’s • Moved into Recruitment/staff development role in April 2005

JPMC Objectives • Attract new (younger!) staff to Mainframe environment • Provide a structured career path for Mainframe Technicians • Provide structured development & training programs for Mainframe Technicians • More effectively measure staff/ECS progress against objectives and development plans • More effectively assess technical skills of technicians • More effectively assess technical skills of potential employees • Do they have all of the skills that they say they have? • Enable more effective targeting of resources

Discipline Certification • Industry recognised and global (U.S, EMEA & AP) • Provides external qualification • Multi – Level • Basic (Assistant) • Intermediate (Engineer) • Expert (Consultant) • Based on any combination of work experience and formal training • Obtained by formal examination • Written • Practical • Re-take every 2 – 3 years to keep current • Can be linked to job grade • Career path framework? • Could form part of recruitment process (if you don’t have it..sit it!)

  6. Discipline Certification contd… • Can IBM do it? • Recognition of external bodies essential • IBM • GSE • BCS • Others? • Discuss and fine tune as necessary the final proposal

Current IBM Certifications • zSeries Technical V1 exam • IBM Business Partners • IBM Technical Sales Support Staff • Possibly an option for z/Series Architect/Solution Designer • Aims to promote IBM products over ISV • Storage • IBM Product specific • No offering for Storage discipline • DB2 (Technology certification) • Many different offerings • Could be adopted by JPMC • More Technical • Multiple Choice • Currently used by Royal Bank of Scotland • CICS, Performance, Security, z/OS Systems Programmer, Network, Operations • No certifications offered • All except DB2 sales driven

Technology Certification - What we would like from IBM • Officially recognise and adopt MTP • Participate in Oversight of exams • Build multi level certification programs for individual technologies e.g. • Processors • FICON • z/OS • VTS • ESS • SMS • HSM • JES2 • VTAM • Omegamon • Provide SME’s for Customers and IBM • Improved problem determination/resolution capability • SME’s help train other staff

Technology Certification • What vendors do we want to include? • CA • ASG (TMON) • BMC • EMC • HDS • STK • Innovation • Compuware • Software AG • SAS • Sterling Commerce • SEA • Mobius • Provide SME’s for Customers • Improved problem determination/resolution capability • SME’s help train other staff • POC for vendors to provide regular product updates
