    2. Overview Economic and workforce development has reached a tipping point in Mississippi causing the MDE to take a closer look at the delivery of workforce education in our state. A variety of research and feedback from stakeholder groups has been analyzed to develop this plan. This plan will outline the proposed research-based new direction for the 7th 9th grade Discovery courses, Career Centers, and career pathways for Mississippi.

    6. ICT I Counseling Component Parental Awareness Counselors will have a parental awareness meeting to share information about career clusters, Carnegie units, and student career interest. Career Interest Through ICT curriculum, students will be introduced to different career opportunities. Students will also have the opportunity to use programs such as Career Choices to determine their level of interest in particular careers.

    9. ICT II Counseling Component Career Pathway Selection Through the ICT II curriculum, students will have the opportunity to investigate career pathways. Scheduling for High School Counselors will meet with parents and students to schedule high school courses for students. In addition, each student will be assigned to a mentor.

    12. STEM Applications Counseling Component Select Career Pathway Upon the completion of the STEM Applications curriculum, students and parents will select a career pathway. Students will be allowed to change pathways. Cohort/Academy Group Upon the completion of the STEM Applications course, students will enter a cohort/academy pathway group. They will stay in this cohort/academy group throughout their high school career. A teacher/advisor is matched to students by pathway choice to mentor students.

Integration of Workforce Education in High School Career Pathways: A Research-Based Strategy Encompasses numerous occupations sharing a common theme into a broad category Provides students a context for connecting what they are learning across a wide spectrum of academic subject areas through the theme Expands options and opportunities for all students Provides map to reinforce academic learning by demonstrating direct application of classroom learning to the world of work Provides flexible scheduling for students

Integration of Workforce Education in High School Career Pathways: A Research-Based Strategy Enables students to gain a practical understanding of the broad range of career, occupational, and educational options that are open to them Helps students gain a better understanding of their own interests and potential Connects interests to future education and career options Equips students to develop goals and plan for their career by making well-informed decisions Serves as a funding mechanism to meet Carl Perkins 1998 standards and as a link to the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the U.S. Department of Labor

Integration of Workforce Education in High School Vocational Education Courses Integrate academic, workforce, and technology skills in all secondary vocational curriculum frameworks Certified Rigor and Relevance trainer will serve on each curriculum framework revision team All vocational curricula will include active learning techniques, cooperative learning, and project-based learning teaching and assessment strategies Face-to-face and online professional development opportunities dedicated to increasing the Rigor and Relevance curriculum enhancement will be available to academic and vocational educators

WE WORK Center Workforce Education With Online Learning for Real-world Knowledge Extension of the high school guidance counselors office A media center technician : facilitates and proctors online courses for the Mississippi Virtual High School assists counselors with scheduling for career pathways assists students in researching careers using Career Choices and/or other Internet resources is available to students before, during, and after school provides technology support administers the TABE test to 9th graders (pre and post) coordinates parent and industry volunteers
