  1. Third Year Parents Information Evening St. David’s Holy Faith Secondary School, Greystones, Co. Wicklow Thursday, 12th September 2019 7: 30 p.m. – 9 p.m.

  2. Structure of Presentation: • One hour & thirty minutes presentation on Third Year Two speakers this evening: • School Principal – Ms. O’ Doherty • School Deputy Principal – Mr. Carey

  3. The Journey of a Third Year student: • Homework (sample questions, feedback, oral presentation, extra classes) • Study (Logos Study – commences Friday, 13rd September 2019 from 3: 50 pm – 5: 50 pm) & Night Study (commencing October 2018) with parental support from 7 – 9 p.m • We seek parental support for night study (Mondays – Thursdays)

  4. Quality of Life in Third Year • Controlled use of social media and devices such as iPhones, iPads and technology • Revision & study plans • Sleep • Food • Physical Activity • Friends

  5. Resources available for study include past examination papers, marking schemes, Chief Inspectors Reports available online on www.examinations.ie • Parental encouragement and support • Pacing of work for a whole year – avoid burnout • Positive mindset

  7. Deputy Principal address • Lates (new policy introduced in August 2015) • School uniform, shoes, hair, jewellery (huge improvement) • Mobile phone policy • Tutor system and times (each morning in rooms 24 (3A), 6 (3B), 29 (3C) & 27 (3D) from 8: 45 a.m. – 8: 50 a.m.)

  8. Attendance • Extra-curricular activities 2019 – 2020 (copy provided to each student, school website, twitter) • Homework journal • New Year Head appointed within the next two weeks

  9. Junior Certificate 2019 - 2020 • Students assessed summatively in June 2020 in ten subjects (English, Gaeilge, Maths, History, Geography, Science, CSPE, Religious Education and three optional subjects) • Students are incrementally (2016 – 2022 roll out by Department of Education of new J.C.) learning subjects in different formats with less emphasis on Higher or Ordinary levels (only English, Gaeilge & Maths), instead Common level applying to all new courses (Business and Science) with shift from rote and summative assessment, to group work, partnership and formative assessment

  10. New grading system for Junior Certificate Exams (2020) Students are awarded no grades in English, Business, Science, Spanish, French, Gaeilge, Visual Art (2020) – instead this will appear: • Distinction (90 – 100%) • Higher Merit (75 – 89%) • Merit (55 – 74%) • Achieved (40 – 54%) • Partially Achieved (20 – 39%) • No Grade (0 - 19%) Each paper is two hours in duration

  11. Old grading system maintained, as well levels (Higher or Ordinary) for all other exams subjects until 2022: • A = 85 – 100% • B = 70 – 84% • C = 55 – 69% • D = 40 – 54% • E = 25 – 39% • F = 10 – 24% • N.G = 0 – 9%

CBA2s • As part of new Junior Certificate assessment and subject changes, Classroom Based Assessments (CBA2s) will take place in Visual Art (Nov 5th – Dec 13th 2019), English (Nov 17th – Dec 7th 2019), Business (25th Nov 2019 – 14th Dec 2019), Science (2nd Dec 2019 – 10th Jan 2020), French & Spanish (18th Nov 2019 - 5th Dec 2019),Gaeilge (CBA1 Nov 24th – Dec 6th 2019 & CBA2 Feb 12th – March 13th 2020) for all Third Year students • At end of CBAs in Third Year, an Assessment Task (A.T.) takes place in class (10% of J.C.)

  13. This written task (A.T) is completed by students, under teacher supervision and, this constitutes 10% of total J.C. mark in each respective subject. It is corrected by J.C. examiner, with the June paper (2020) • There is a separate grade awarded for the CBAs (which is given as part of the Junior Certificate Profile of Achievement) known as the JCPA which is issued two months after the J.C. results

  14. Subjects with no CBAs • Maths • T.G • Materials Technology Wood • Metalwork • Home Economics • History • Geography • Religious Education These subjects will be tested by traditional H.L or O.L at Junior Certificate level in June 2020

  15. Grade/Descriptor awarded for CBAs • Each subject department devises its own standards & protocol for CBAs that students must follow Subject departments meet and all teachers apply the criterion and award one of four descriptors: • Exceptional • Above Expectations • In line with expectations • Yet to meet expectations These will be shown in the JCPA report issued in November 2020 (provisional)

  16. How are grades shown for J.C. Exams in June 2020? CBAs reported? • Your son and daughter will receive two types of reports on their Junior Certificate (2020): • A new date for release of Junior Certificate results will take effect from this year, first Friday of October. Students will receive their Junior Certificate results for ten subjects with grades for up to eight subjects provided and descriptors for English, Science, foreign language (French or Spanish), Visual Art & Business • Additionally, at the end of November 2020, St. David’s will issue a second certificate called the Junior Certificate Profile of Achievement (JCPA) which will contain Junior Certificate results (June exams 2020), CBAs in English, foreign language, Science, Business and Visual Art as well as notable, non-curricular achievements, of your son and daughter in Second & Third Years

Timetable • 42 periods per week • English, Gaeilge, Maths, History, Geography, RE, PE, CSPE, SPHE, Science – core subjects • French, Spanish, Technical Graphics, Materials Technology Wood, Metalwork, Business, Visual Art, Home Economics – optional subjects • Three whole school modular exams – Friday, 22nd Nov – 29th Nov 2019 (Third & Sixth Year Exams); Tuesday, Feb 4th – Friday, Feb 14th 2020 (Mocks) & Wednesday, 3rd June – Wednesday, 17th June 2020 Junior Certificate 2020

Key events for Third Years 2019 - 2020 • Friday, 13th Sept 2019: Third Year Study Skills • Thursday, 10th Oct 2019: School closure – New J.C. training for teachers (CBAs) & Tuesday, 10th Dec 2019 – subject department for J.C. • Thursday, 17th October 2019: Third Year Parent-Teacher Meeting • November Exams (22nd – 29th November 2019) for Third & Sixth Years • Junior Certificate Mock Exams 2020 (Nine days: Tuesday, 4th Feb 2020 – Friday, 14th Feb 2020) • Tuesday, 4th Feb 2020: Information Evening Meeting on T.Y. (7: 30 p.m. – 9 p.m.)

  19. Tuesday, 25th Feb 2020 – Parents Information Meeting on Fifth Year Subject Options • Monday, 9th March – Friday, 13th March 2020: SeachtainnaGaeilge • Monday, 16th March – Friday, 20th March 2020 – Whole-School Numeracy Week, St. David’s

J.C. write-ups in Religion in March 2020; coursework assessment in Materials Technology Wood, Metalwork, Visual Art by April 2020; practical exams in Metalwork in May 2020 • Third Year Block Study – Friday, 23rd May 2020 – Friday, 30th May 2020 • State Examinations (Junior Certificate/Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement 2020) – provisionally scheduled to commence Wednesday, 3rd June 2020 – Wednesday, 17th June 2020

  21. Role of the Third Year Year Head • Year Head has a dual role - pastoral and behavior • Year Head, once appointed, works with Third Year tutors, Mr. Lawlor, Ms. Courtney, Ms. Keaveney & Ms. Cunningham • If you as a parent have a concern, the Year Head, is the first port of call to contact • Regular Assemblies with Third Year Year Head, students and Deputy Principal

  22. Behaviour & Pastoral • To ensure school code of behaviour is fairly and consistently applied to all third year students re: exams, mobile phone policy, anti-bullying, lates, attendance, shoes, hair, jewellery, etc • ‘Student voice’ is always to the fore at St. David’s Holy Faith Secondary School • Promote students to participate in all aspects of school life, particularly study and extra-curricular • Assemblies are used as a key communicative tool in ensuring school policies are applied and respected by all students.

  23. Transition Year 2020 - 2021 • We encourage all students to apply for Transition Year • Excellent student behavior is essential in Third Year • Transition Year Information Evening held on Tuesday, 4th February 2020 with application forms issued to students that week.

Final Words • Third Year is a tough year but with planning and organisation, students will do very well • Keep calm and as parents, remember to talk to your son(s) & daughter(s) • We, as a school, are here to help and will continue to support your son and/or daughter during this most important year
