  2. What Is A Tornado ? • A Tornado is a funnel-like storm of strong winds.

  3. What Conditions Cause Tornadoes? • A Tornado then forms a funnel cloud (it looks like the clouds swirling in a circle together.) If the conditions stay right, the tornado grows and can even touch the ground. This is when it is most deadly. So these storms are very dangerous.

  4. How Long Does A Tornado Last? • Tornadoes usually last just a few minutes. The shortest last for only a few seconds, but the longest can last for over an hour (but these are extremely rare)!

  5. When Do Tornadoes Usually Happen? • Tornadoes are probably the most spectacular type of storm, but are certainly one of the most violent. Fortunately, however, they are restricted in their range. Although they occur in some form on all continents, it is the U.S.A. where they most frequently cause disaster. Tornadoes usually form during cloudy, stormy weather and descend from severe thunderstorms as rapidly-spinning white funnels of cloud.

  6. What Kind of Damage Does A Tornado usually do to Property? • Weak tornadoes may break branches or damage signs. Damage to buildings primarily affects roofs and windows, and may include loss of the entire roof or just part of the roof covering and sheathing. Windows are usually broken from windborne debris. • In a strong tornado, some buildings may be destroyed but most suffer damage like loss of exterior walls or roof or both; interior walls usually survive. • Violent tornadoes cause severe to incredible damage, including heavy cars lifted off the ground and thrown and strong frame houses leveled off foundations and swept away; trees are uprooted, debarked and splintered. • Weak tornadoes make up 74% of all tornadoes, while 67% of all tornado deaths come from violent tornadoes.
