Welcome!I’m thrilled to be your teacher! • Mrs. Weizer, formerly Miss McConnell, a graduate of NPHS • B.A. in English from Muhlenberg College • M.A. in English from Arcadia University • Lived and studied abroad one year at the University of St Andrews in Scotland • 8th year at NPHS; 9th year of teaching • Also taught in Allentown (middle school) and West Lawn (home of NFL QB Chad Henne) • Married this summer, July 27, and honeymooned in Jamaica, mon! • Founded the Dance Team, former coach; current adviser to the Accolade

Here I am with my husband, Mr. Weizer, at our wedding ceremony. We were married on July 27 at the William Penn Inn. It was a beautiful day—the best day EVER! Here I am getting ready for my senior prom in 2000!
A little more about me . . . • Mom to a tiny black kitten named Amelia • LOVE to read, write, cook, and shop • Used to be a member of a National Championship hip hop dance team—we’re on youtube • Die-hard Phillies & Flyers fan • Can’t go a day without listening to music: Lady Gaga, The Beatles, The Traveling Wilburys, Biggie, 2Pac, Outkast, Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, Raphael Saadiq, Motown (Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Boyz II Men), Michael Jackson, Classic Rock (Led Zeppelin, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, etc.) . . . Almost everything except country & screaming music • I’ve wanted to be an English teacher since I was 12 years.
What are the rules* in this room?*I hesitate to call these rules because they are actually attitudes and ways of behaving. • Be on time! • Be ready! • Be safe! • Be courteous! • Be heard! • Be hungry to learn! • Be civil! • Be original! • I expect that as high school students, you understand how to act in a classroom. If you are not able to follow these Eight Be-Attitudes, be prepared to experience consequences per the NPHS Discipline Code.
What will I be doing this year? • Learning all about print media! • If the topic is in print, we’ll be discussing the media’s treatment of it. • All points of view are encouraged! • Respect for each other’s opinion is MANDATORY!!!! • We’ll examine the following areas: • Journalistic ethics, style, lead writing, interview techniques, news writing, feature writing, reviews, sports writing, editorial writing, investigative reporting, obituary writing, photography, page layout, headline and caption writing, proofreading, editing, and anything else in which you are interested!
How will I be graded? • Handy dandy grading policy will be saved for another day. • You’ve gotten too many grading policies today. • You’re welcome.

Do you know the news? • Sophomores can get out their papers. • Juniors/Seniors need a handout. • Note which news events you’ve heard of and mark HOW you heard of them. Watching the news? Newspaper? Facebook? Twitter? Parents? • If you haven’t heard of a news event, leave it blank. • We’ll discuss what we know and HOW we know it in this ever-evolving world of journalism
First Assignment: The Top 10 News Stories of the Summer • Tonight, I want you to think about all of the events that happened over the summer. • Brainstorm and make a list of all of the events you believe are the most newsworthy—i.e. deserving of people’s time and attention. • Then narrow your list down to the top ten events. Arrange them in order of importance; one is the most important; ten is the least important. • Find a headline pertaining to each news story and make sure to write it down. Cite your source.
Example • If I thought the theater shooting in Colorado was the fourth most important news event of the summer, I would place it at 4 on my list. • I would then search for an article about the shooting and copy the headline onto my paper.
Tomorrow • I want you to be prepared to discuss your choices with the class as a whole and in small groups. Be able to support your choice and explain your reasoning. • This homework assignment will be worth 20 points. • No late submissions accepted. • This is a journalism course—deadlines are KEY and are not to be missed!
