  1. Samples of Learner language; • Development of overall ability to communicate? • Fluency in use of L2? • SLA hasn’t focused on communicative aspects of LD • SLA – formal features of language (linguistics) • Pronunciation of L2 – change of accents • Usage of words – to build-up vocabulary • Focus on grammar of L2 • Plurals or relative clause – development of learner’s ability over time.

  2. Goals of SLA; • Description of L2 acquisition • Explanation – identifying the external and internal factors • External factor – social milieu, social condition, input. • What type of input facilitates learning? • Simplified input or authentic language?

  3. Internal factor – cognitive mechanism enable to extract information. • L2 learners – enormous amount of knowledge, general knowledge about the world, communication strategies, knowledge of how language in general works.

Inbuilt constraints on what is grammatically possible. • Language Aptitude – difference in the rate to learn L2. • Goals of SLA – description of how L2 acquisition proceeds, explain the process, why learners better Case Studies • It is detailed study of a learner's acquisition of an L2. • Longitudinal – collection of samples of the learner’s speech or writing over a period of time, years.
