Insurance Plan Options Objectives: Students will be able to compare various health insurance plans through marketplace, individual insurance companies, and employee benefits in order to select an appropriate plan given their circumstances. Students will be able to critique the major aspects of the Affordable Care Act in order to form their own opinion about health insurance.

Political Views on The Affordable Care Act Republicans Democrats Starts at Minute 11 17 million kids with pre-existing conditions were able to gain coverage 220,000 seniors are able to get assistance paying for prescription medication 90,000 people are staying on their parent’s insurance • First 8 Minutes • 5 million people lost health insurance so that 50,000 people could apply • For every 1 person who got insurance there were 100 people who lost insurance

  3. Single Payer System of Health Care • Centrally controlled health care system. Typically controlled by the government • In order to provide all citizens with health care everyone pays higher taxes • May still require supplemental health insurance in order to be provided with the best care. • Ex. Canada

Other Countries Healthcare • Canada – Single Payer: Health care is funded by income taxes and sales tax revenue with all citizens having health care. • China – Public Universal Health Care: People can be underinsured and benefits are often limited • Italy – Single Payer: Publicly run and mostly funded through taxation. Some services require a small copay while others are completely free of charge. • Japan – Single Payer: All citizens are required to have health insurance either through their work or purchased through a non-profit community based plan. Those who can’t afford it receive federal assistance. • Spain – Single Payer: Funded through payroll taxes

  6. Scenarios - Directions • In a group you will be provided with a health insurance scenario. You need to work together to determine what health insurance plan would be best given the situation provided. • You may use the computer or your cell phone to log on to the marketplace to find an appropriate plan. • It is your job to explain why and how you came to your health insurance choice.

  7. What are your thoughts about our system? • Can it be fixed? • Does it need to be fixed? • How would you fix it. • Write your answer to this on your notes outline. You will be sharing this with the class.

  8. Health Insurance After High School • Do you know what coverage you will have or will be available to you when you graduate from North Penn? • Do you know what coverage you will have available to you when you turn 26 and how to get it? • What further questions do you have?

  9. Exit Worksheet • Directions: Independently complete the provided worksheet. I am checking to see that you understand the insurance terms and plans as well as the aspects of The Affordable Care Act. • When finished turn your assignment into the black bin by the window. This assignment is worth 10 points. This is your first grade for the second semester.
