  7. Security Situation Update • Rear Area Threat: Threat Condition High. “Scud” attack still possible. • NO GO Areas: Iraq, Northern Kuwait Border • Bypassed Iraqi Units: Not known at this time.

  8. Security Situation Update • Population instability: Unconfirmed news reports that roughly 5K people around Safwan need water but have not requested food. CA assets directed to assess. • Umm Qasr: Detailed assessment by CA teams began 241100Z. Assessment on going. Mine sweep of port facilities and waters leading to port continues.

Southern Highlights • Still no significant DC activity • Work continues on water pipeline to Umm Qasr; estimated operational by 30 Mar • Five oil well fires remain, two having been extinguished since the yesterday’s update • Repair of water treatment plant near Basrah • Mine sweep of Umm Qasr channel continues • CA BDE in Umm Qasr conducting area assessments and preparing to facilitate port opening in 1 UK Div area

IOM Information • At UN request IOM responds by providing: • Repatriation for Third Country Nationals (TCNs) • Transport assist to TCNs, refugees to transit camps • Coordinate humanitarian relief for DP inside Iraq, access permitting • 20 Palestinians from no man’s land by IOM bus to Ruweished Camp at Jordanian request

IOM Information • Last week, IOM assisted 559 TCNs transit from Iraq into Jordan. • 361 have returned home • 305 Sudanese, 39 Egyptians, 10 Chadians, 4 South Africans, 1 Yemeni, 1 Somali • 199 remain at Ruweished TCN transit camp • Over past 24 hours, 9 Egyptians, 5 Somalis, 1 Lebanese have arrived in camp • Ruweished run by Jordanian Red Crescent with IOM support

Iraqi ParamilitaryFedayeen Saddam • Saddam’s “Men of Sacrifice” • Paramilitary organization • Founded by Uday Hussein in 1995 • Helps protect Saddam and Uday from dissenters • Reports directly to Presidential Palace • 20-40,000 members, young soldiers from loyal regions, reports of up to 100,000 • Reportedly have used “death squads” in past • Currently attacking in coalition rear areas
