Project Goal To promote the development of village based poultry production and sustainably improve the livelihoods, incomes, food security and nutritional level of poor and vulnerable rural households
PROJECT DETAILS • Origin To enhance the financial independence of rural women • Duration 3 years (March 2010 to April 2013) • Targeted area/beneficiaries 3,000 women of 60 villages in 3 districts of Balkh and Jawzjan Provinces
ACHIEVEMENTS OF PROJECT • 20 women trainers, 24 group leaders & 2 young animal husbandry consultants in place • 2,000 women beneficiaries trained in improved backyard poultry production and received poultry kits • 35,000 pullets distributed to 2,000 women
2,000 improved poultry coops constructed in target villages • Introduction and extension of improved poultry husbandry practices at village levels • Contribution to reduced imports and increased level of household food security • Over 500,000 eggs produced to date, out of which a reasonable number were sold in the market or to neighbors
UNIQUE PROGRAM FEATURES The flocks are ‘semi-scavenging’ which allow lower input costs with successful results Trainings are sustainable & supported through a Village Poultry Production Group (VPPG)
POSITIVE IMPACTS ON WOMEN • Establishment of VPPGs empower the village women and enable them to make group wide decisions • Increased access to regular and dependable egg marketing • Increased women’s participation in the development of livestock sector • Increased household food security and income from poultry production
