Length • In the customary system, length is measured in inches, feet, yards, and miles. • The length of a leaf would be measured in inches. • The trunk of a tree would be measured in feet. • The height of the entire tree might be measured in yards. • The distance from here to the Dollar General would be measured in miles. 12 in = 1 ft 3 ft = 1 yard 5,280 ft = 1 mile

Metric Units for Length • Kilometer (km) – a little smaller than a mile • Meter (m) – about the width of a door • Centimeter (cm) – about the width of a large paperclip • Millimeter (mm) – about the thickness of a dime 1,000 mm = 1 m 100 cm = 1 m 10 decimeters (dm) = 1 m 1 kilometer (km) = 1,000 m

  7. Metric Units of Capacity & Volume • Milliliter (ml) – about the amount in an eye dropper • Liter (l) – 2 liter bottler of Coke 1,000 ml = 1 liter 1,000 liters = 1 kiloliter

  12. Metric Units for Mass • Milligram (mg) = takes 1,000 mg to make a gram • Gram ( g) = about one paperclip • Kilogram (kg) = about the mass of a book 1,000 mg = 1 g 1,000 g = 1 kg
