Eubie Banks 1887-1983. Eubie (1883-1983) was the 10th child born to Emily and James Hubert Blake, (former slaves) and was the only one of the 10 to live past infancy. At about the age of 12, Eubie learned to play the cornet and played with Charlie "Cap" Harris' band.

Eubie Banks 1887-1983 • Eubie (1883-1983) was the 10th child born to Emily and James Hubert Blake, (former slaves) and was the only one of the 10 to live past infancy. • At about the age of 12, Eubie learned to play the cornet and played with Charlie "Cap" Harris' band. • In 1903, Eubie began wobble-wobble bass style while playing at Annie Gilly's, which later became his trademark sound. • At 19, he joined In Old Kentucky, a music company. • Started a career with Noble Sissle in 1915, met James Reese Europe and produced Shuffle Along (1921), a musical that ran on Broadway for over 500 performances. His career with Noble Sissle ended in 1927. • Regularly appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and also appeared on the Jerry Lewis Telethon. • June 5, 1973, Eubie was awarded honorary doctorate from Brooklyn College • June 10, 1973, Tompkins Theater in NY was renamed Eubie Blake Theater. • Characteristics: • Eubie was very particular about his appearance, usually tasteful and color coordinated, took his time with his appearance. • Did not play sports in order to protect his "delicate but powerful" hands. • Good buck dancer.
