Introductions“Like Me” • Stand up if you are a Pre-K teacher • Stand up if you are a Kindergarten teacher • Stand up if you are a 1st Grade teacher • Stand up if you are a 2nd Grade teacher or higher • Stand up if you are a First Year Teacher • Stand up if you are a Daycare/Home provider or Head Start • Stand up if you are an administrator or support your district in other ways • Stand up if you had to drive over 2 hours to get to this conference • Stand up if you went or are going out of state on vacation this summer • Stand up if you needed caffeine to get going this morning

  3. Today’s Objectives • Creating and learning how to set up learning stations in the classroom. • Learning how to easily implement stations in order to promote independence. • See examples and get ideas of learning station jobs that keep students accountable.

  4. Setting Up Your Classroom

Station Areas Keep In Mind Station Area Ideas Puzzles Building Materials (blocks/legos) Listening Pocketchart Smart Board Art Writing Reading/ Library ABCs/ Word Work Computers Ipads Sensory Table Dramatic Play • Our stations are arranged in our classrooms to ensure student visibility at all times. • Flexible and varied work spaces are key. • Floor space, clipboards, standing at counter tops, stools, small area rugs as well as tables and chairs are just a few options.

  6. Puzzle/ Block Station • This station can have many different things • We have table top blocks, Legos, floor puzzles, Lincoln Logs, people, cars, animals, large wooden blocks, etc.

  7. Listening Station • We like to have 1 book per student (so every student in the station has their own copy) • We have purchased a lot of our listening books through Scholastic. • Bonus Points are your friend! 

  8. Pocket Chart Station • Students self select letter picture cards to use for their job • Students look at big books if they finish their job. • They can use highlighter tape to search for letter and sight words

  9. Art Station • At this station, the student’s job is to make letter art • Items to include for free choice: • Markers/ crayons • Paint • Play dough • Crazy scissors • Hole punchers • Assorted paper • Glue • Chalk/ chalk board • Whiteboards

  11. Library Station • A comfortable area for kids to enjoy books • Each book has a label that matches the book box • Possible ideas: • Lamp • Rugs • Pillows • Bean Bags • Stuffed Animals (reading buddy) • Comfortable chairs

  12. ABC/ Word Work Station • Items to include • Magnetic letters/ cookie sheets • Alphabet books • Alphabet puzzles • Stamps • Letter Writing books • Letter beads • CVC word practice • Letter tubs • Letter beanbags • Electronic letter toys

  13. Getting Started

  14. Grouping • Groups are created to be independent • The goal is to have students solving their own problems and working with peers while freeing up the teacher to assess and work with individuals • We strategically place students in groups with various academic abilities to foster independence. • We also provide students with a reference folder

  17. 6- Weeks Implementation • During these 6 weeks we are practicing the station job during whole group so students feel independent • It takes 6 weeks of practice for students to learn something new

  19. The Jobs…

  20. Overview of Jobs • We have 15 minutes per station • We have selected jobs that take about 7 minutes to complete • Allowing students to have free choice time once the job is completed • As the school year progresses, the degree of difficulty for some jobs increases • Station jobs should not always be paper/pencil.

  21. Art Station Job • One of our goals in this station, is to practice and develop fine motor control • Each week students cut out a letter that coincides with the letter of the week • We copy letters on to construction paper http://printerprojects.com/

Pocket Chart Station Job • At the beginning of the week during whole group ELA introduction, we go over the letter picture cards for the week. • Students use these cards for their station job • The year starts with recording 5 pictures, then progress to 10 pictures, ending with 5 pictures to record and 5 pictures they choose to draw themselves

Listening Station Job • Students responsibility is to listen to the story 2 times. • When they are finished, students draw a picture from the story on their whiteboards. • We tried a response sheet, but we found it was to much and we were not getting quality work • Depending on the amount of time, you can add a response sheet if you wish

Puzzle/ Block Station Job • Other options could be: • Sight Word Puzzles • Building words with blocks/ legos • Lego Sight Word Towers • Jenga inspired Sight Word Game • Building words with Pool Noodles • Stamping sight words into Play Dough with wooden ABC blocks • Using legos to make words in Play Dough • Mega Blocks Sight Words

  27. Writing Station Job • Other options could be: • Using something other then a pencil to complete the job • Salt trays (rainbow writing) • Shaving Cream • Highlighter tracing • Q-tip painting the letter • Bubble Writing • Glitter Gel Writing
