History of the sport • The first ever club to be established dates back to 1880 when a school teacher named John Fletcher made a team called “The Wanderers” in New South Wales. • The first football match to ever take place under Australia FA rules was the Wanderers against the Kings School Rugby Football team in 1880 in Paramatta.

  3. Contemporary popularity • Football is still very large in Australia and still has high numbers of participation. • It is played recreational and professionally by elite athletes and amateurs.
