  2. Why Lightning occurs • Lightning occurs when regions of excess positive and negative charge develop within the cloud. Typically, there is a large volume of positive charge in the upper regions of the cloud, and a large negative charge in the center. (lightning: cloud-to-ground lightning)

  3. Different Kinds of Lightning • These are the three most common kinds of lightning. • Cloud-to-ground Lightning: It is which a cloud initiates the strike causing the discharge to arc downward into the ground. • Ground-to-cloud Lightning: Is when a tall object on the ground that builds up a strike that travels up in the cloud. • Cloud-to-cloud Lightning: It occurs when a bolt arcs between two clouds in the sky without actually reaching the sky. (Discovery Channel)

  4. Destruction from Lightning • Lightning sets about 10,000 forests fires every year in the United States. • About 400 people who survive lightning strikes each year often suffer permanent disabilities, such as memory loss, sleep disorders, numbness, weakness, and depression. (Lightning Devastation More Common Than You Might Think )

  5. Zeus lightning bolt • During the Trojan war, Zeus proceeded to free the 100 Handed giants, Cyclopes, and the Hecatonchires, all the siblings of Cronus that were imprisoned in Tartarus. In thanks for their freedom, the Cyclopes gave Zeus the knowledge of how to craft thunderbolts. The Titans were overthrown and were downgraded to Tartarus to be punished for all eternity guarded by the Gigantes. (Greek Gods)

  6. Mythological Reason • Zeus was the "Lord of Justice", punishing anyone who lied or broke an oath, but was fair and always deciding to keep a balance of all things. • Zeus was responsible for the weather and was shaping it according to his temper. When he was in a good mood, Zeus was blessing the world with fine weather. However when he was in a bad mood, he would throw rain, winds, lightning and thunderbolts to cause disaster to the mortals. (Zeus the King of the Gods)
