  2. OH&S in the Workshop Safety is an important aspect of modern day living, for there are many ways in which we can injury ourselves, and others. From an early age children are taught about safety.

  3. You learn: not to touch things on the stove; not to play with fire, electrical appliances, medicine and pills; how to cross the road safety; how to swim safely; how to ride their bicycles safely. Safety is an ONGOING thing!

  4. Very Important You the student MUST be AWARE of the dangers in the workshop and the NEED to ALWAYS work SAFELY.

  5. SAFETY INSTRUCTION The aim of safety instruction is to eliminate student injury. How is this done? By teaching you (the student) to avoid unnecessary, risks and to cope sensibly and confidently with those risks that cannot be avoided.

  6. The following approach should be followed: At the beginning of each unit of work, before any practical work is done, I will give a lesson on general safety in the workshop. Each student will be given (or have already) a duplicated set of “General Safety Rules” to be either pasted or stapled into their theory books.

  7. Lessons and demonstrations by the teacher of operations or machine practices with safety precautions being emphasised. Relevant safety rules will be given to students either written, pasted or stapled into their theory books. REGISTRATION OF SAFETY INSTRUCTION IS MOST NECESSARY.

  8. GENERAL SAFETY TEST Q1. Clothing worn in the Technics room should be: • brightly coloured so that the teacher can see you; • loose and baggy so that you don’t get hot; • close fitting, comfortable and not a safety hazard; • a dark colour so that grease and dirt won’t show on it.

  9. Question 2 Q2. Protective clothing such as aprons etc. should be worn because: • the canteen makes a profit from the aprons they sell; • they protect your clothing from dirt, grease and shavings as well as keeping loose clothing tucked safely away; • it looks professional; • you need an apron in which to store your job.

  10. Question 3 Q3. The type of shoes to be worn in the Technics room are: • thongs; • sandals; • sandshoes; • shoes with leather uppers and firm sole.

  11. Question 4 Q4. Why are the majority of accidents caused by hand tools? • because they are dangerous • because they are difficult to use on hard materials; • the hand tools are too hard to use; • the hand tools are not used, carried, laid down, stored, sharpened or adjusted correctly.

  12. Question 5 Q5. Why should careful attention be given when the teacher is demonstrating the correct methods of using hand tools? • because the teacher will punish any pupil not paying attention; • lack of attention could cause you to ruin your job; • it is impolite not to pay attention to what you are told; • ignorance could result in hand tools could be used incorrectly and so the user could be seriously injured.

  13. Question 6 Q6. When you have finished using a tool! it should be: • put back in its rack; • left on your bench in case you will need it again; • put on someone else’s bench so that they will have to put it away; • hidden in the sink.

  14. Question 7 Q7. The bench you work at is the responsibility of: • the other people working at your bench; • the people in charge of monitoring the tools; • you, to keep it neat andtidy; • the teacher to clean up.

  15. Question 8 Q8. All accidents in the Technics room should be: • ignored; • reported to the cleaner; • reported to the teacher; • wrapped in an apron.

  16. Question 9 Q9. All jobs must be supported when working on them by: • holding it in your laps; • vice, clamp, or jig, so that it is firmly held; • holding it in your hand; • getting someone else to hold it for you.

  17. Question 10 Q10. Defective or blunt tools are not used because: • you might be blamed for breaking them; • they may damage your work; • they are a danger to your safety and to the safety of everyone in the room; • they don’t work as well as undamaged tools.

  18. Question 11 Q11. Movement in the workshop should be kept to a minimum because: • movement burns up energy and you don’t want to end up tired. • unnecessary movement around the workshop increases the chance of an accident. • excessive movement makes you feel hot. • workshops are not places to move in.

  19. Question 12 Q12. Students should avoid making a thoroughfare of the marked zones around machines because: • it will wear out the floor unnecessarily. • you might damage a machine. • you could distract or bump the person operating the machine and hence cause an accident. • these zones are sometimes noisy.
