Summary of the Event: The Suez Crisis • Nasser, President of Egypt, nationalized the Suez Canal after Britain and the USA withdrew their offer to fund the building of the Aswan Dam • This began the war: Egypt vs. Britain, France & Israel • Relationship between USA & Britain falters • Nationalism & communism became popular

Lester Pearson & Canada’s Role • Canada=Middle power • Lester Pearson, Secretary of External Affairs of Canada, tries to propose a peace-keeping force; initially does not work • Nov 1, 1956: Finally is able to have his proposal considered. Nov 4: Yay!! The world’s first peacekeeping forces are made. • The UN praised Pearson, but at home many condemned him. • Receives Nobel Peace Prize in 1957
