Registration • Student screening is ONLY used to get to know your child better. We can be better prepared to meet each child’s needs if we have some idea of their prior knowledge. • SCREENING COMPONENTS: • Identification of uppercase & lowercase letters • Knowledge of relationship between letters & sounds • Counting and identifying numbers from 1-20 • Identification of shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle, square) • *Results of the screening are shared with you the day of registration.*

A Peek at Our Day • Morning Meeting/Circle Time • Phonemic Awareness (activities that • encourage the manipulation of words) • Storytown Whole Group Reading • High frequency words • Vocabulary • Comprehension • Phonics • Integrated Units (science, social studies, special themes)
Daily Schedule • Specials: Art, Music, Gym, or Library • Classes run on a 6 day rotation. A calendar will be sent home at the beginning of each month stating the schedule. In the event of a snow day, do not “count” that day. We will pick up right where we left off. • Example: Snow Day
Daily Schedule • Small Group Reading & Title I Intervention • Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) provides financial assistance to states and school districts to meet the needs of educationally at-risk students. Students are selected for this program based upon district assessments. • The goal of Title I is to provide extra instructional services and activities beyond the regular classroom. It is a flexible program; students will receive help as needed • throughout the year.

Recess • We try to take the children to the outside playground as much as possible. Please mark coats/gloves/hats with your child’s name and be sure to follow the school’s dress code (no flip flops). • When the weather does not permit us to have outside recess, we will play in our classrooms. PLEASE do not send any toys to school.
Lunch • Cost: $1.85 for Lunch, $1.00 for Breakfast. • Payment Options: • Send money in a sealed envelope marked with the student’s name and pin number. Make checks payable to GLSD Food Service. • Pay online (see Cafeteria Prepay on the district homepage). There is an additional fee to pay online. • Free & reduced lunch applications- • please see us.
Lunch • 4 Daily Choices: • Packers • Main Line: changes daily; please check the cafeteria • calendar each morning. • Sandwich Line: hamburger/cheeseburger/chicken • patty/hot dog, chips, fruit, drink choice • Salad Bar: Salad with choice of toppings along with a • side dish. • Each student has a personal “pin” number that is linked to their lunch account. They will receive this the first day of school. • Talk to your child about his/her choice for lunch each day. This will help when we line up in the cafeteria.
Transportation • Busing and other transportation procedures will be discussed during the Breakout Session.
Birthdays • Birthdays are very special days in kindergarten and your child will enjoy celebrating his/her birthday in school • with friends. • If you wish to send in a treat to celebrate your child’s birthday, please do not send giant cookies or full size cakes. • Invitations to birthday parties will be distributed by teachers only if all boys, or all girls, or the entire class is invited. • We are not permitted to give out addresses or phone numbers; however, we will send home class lists upon request.
Behavior Management • This topic will be discussed during the Breakout Session!
Absences • Excuses are mandatory after every absence or tardy arrival. Please include child’s full name, teacher, date of absence, reason for absence, and parent signature, and place in your child’s folder. We must have this in writing for office records. An absence is considered unlawful if we do not receive an excuse in five days. • If you are planning a vacation/long weekend, ask for a Vacation Approval Form.
Late Starts/Snow Delays • When the weather is bad, we may have a 2 or 3 hour delay. You will receive a call from Global Connect informing you. Information will also be available on the district website and on the local news. On days that we have a 3 hour delay the children WILL NOT eat lunch at school. • Late Starts: We will have scheduled“late starts”. On these days, we will follow a modified schedule and children will come to school 2 HOURS LATER than their normal time. School will start at 11:05.
Nuts & Bolts • Communication • You will receive an information packet at the beginning of each month. If your child doesn’t bring one home, remind him/her to do so. • Supplies • Each child needs a backpack that should be brought to school daily. The backpack should be big enough to hold a 9½X 11½ inch folder. Check inside the folder everyday for papers or notes and remove finished papers. All other supplies (paper, pencils, markers, crayons, glue, scissors, etc.) are provided.
Nuts & Bolts • Sleep • Please make sure that your child gets enough sleep every night. The full day is a big day for five and six year olds. A good night’s sleep helps your child to learn and cope better. • Parents • Parents are an important learning resource. Please let us know if you would like to share a special skill, travel experience, hobby or career. • · Please volunteer in kindergarten or with the PTO if you have available time. Notify the teacher if you are interested.
