  2. Early Life • He was born in Arnhem, The Netherlands • Son of GerritFrederik Lorentz and Geertrida Lorentz • His dad was a well off nursury man

  3. Schooling • In 1866 the H.B.S. high school in Arnhem was opened • As a gifted pupil he was placed in the 3rd form • After the 5th form and a year of studying the classics • He went to the University of Leiden in 1870

  4. Theory • oscillations of charged particles in atoms are the source of light • Oscillation - the repetitive variation

  5. Contribution • interested in the relationship of electricity, magnetism, and light • made contributions to: • Mechanics • Thermodynamics • Hydrodynamics • Kinetic Theories • Solid State Theory • Light • electromagnetism • the electron theory • relativity

  6. Lorentz–Lorenz Formula • Also known as Clausius–Mossotti relation and Maxwell’s formula • The refractive index of a substance to its polarizability

  7. Lorentz Force • Force on a point charge from electromagnetic field • Electromagnetic field - produced by electrically charged object

  8. Cauchy–Lorentz Distribution • a continuous probability distribution • solution to the differential equation describing forced resonance

  9. Lorentz Transformation • varying time and space measurements can convert into the other’s • reflects observers moving at different velocities
