  1. Brock KellerDesign E-Portfolio Tech 212 Principles of Graphic Design Wednesday Lab Section Fall Semester 2012

  2. Postcard Created 10/17/12 Software Adobe Illustrator Competency This project is the first time I truly used Illustrator. It shows how I have learned the fundamentals of the program. Description For the project I decided to create a drawing pad which is one of the many tools that are used by graphic designers. The back of the postcard was designed off of a simple template, and material given by client. Evaluation Through this process I was able to learn the basics of the program like creating in-closed shapes to fill with color. Also using the rectangle and circle tool. Along with the paint brush and text box tool.

  3. Enterprise design • Created • 12/3/12 • Software • Adobe In-Design • Competency • It had been awhile since I used In-Design, so this project reinforced many of the tools I already learned. • Description • I created a Blu-Ray box cover of the GSS:1 by using another box cover as a template., I picked this subject, because I’m a big fan of science fiction. Evaluation As I stated in the competency section this project reinforced everything I learned from In-Design. It also allowed me to learn the placement of everything on a Blu-Ray cover.

  4. Magazine Cover Created 11/14/12 Software Adobe Illustrator Competency This project shows my understanding of the new EGM covers. Also how to create common gaming ads on the back cover. Description For this project I decided to create a magazine using the EGM template. I picked two games that recently came out, and current topics for the magazines stories. Evaluation This was one of the first times I used Illustrator, so I learned how to place objects in boxes in this program. Also how to accurately measure, or change length of boxes.

  5. Tattoo Created 10/29/12 Software Adobe Illustrator Competency The tattoo project demonstrates my skill with the use of the paint brush tool. Also creating my own color swatches to fill in my shapes. Description For the tattoo assignment I pick medical alert symbol, because I’m a type one diabetic. I also put the date I diagnosed at the bottom. Evaluation This was one of my favorite assignments during the semester. I’ve always wanted to design my own tattoo. Throughout this process I made sure to design the tattoo with a little of my own taste, and a since of realism.

  6. Box Design Created 11/22/12 Software Adobe Illustrator Competency This project shows that I know how to balance out all objects on the box to show a since of unity. Description For the project I picked the hanging box, and a macaroni box to use as a template. From there I used my Fresh Chef logo, and my knowledge of Anellini noodles to create the box. Evaluation Throughout this I was having trouble picking exactly what to put on the box, and eventually it got overcrowded. I took a break, and came back to it. That’s when I realized that less is best, that taking your time on larger projects is beneficial.

  7. Line Art Description For the line art assignment I decided to create whitetail buck. I wanted to make it a little challenging by picking a buck that was standing broad side with most of it’s muscles showing. Evaluation It was this assignment that my skills with the paint brush tool got really good. It was also the assignment that realized I have to use one continuous in-closed line to fill in the color. Competency This assignment shows my skills of creating line art, layering, and filling in color. Created 10/16/12 Software Adobe Illustrator

  8. Milestones Created 8/29/12 Software Adobe In-Design Competency This assignment was at the beginning of the semester, and shows my beginner skills with the program. These skills included text boxes, lines, and placing images. Description The goal of this assignment was to learn the milestones of graphic design, and then pick three I thought were important. The ones I picked were the first company logo, war propaganda, and creation of the Apple 84 computer. Evaluation I remember doing this assignment on one of the first class days, and whole rushed I felt to get it done with it. Along with teaching me some of the most important milestones it also taught me that I had to get assignments done in a timely fashion. Just like in the real world.

  9. Word Design Created 9/27/12 Software Adobe In-Design Competency This assignment shows my basic knowledge of typefaces. Also how to go on the internet, and find the typeface I needed for the assignment. Evaluation During this time in the semester we were learning about typefaces. Doing this assignment I realized there were more typefaces for each of the six basic typefaces than I realized. Description During this assignment I was reminded of a movie I watched when I was younger called Dragon Heart. Especially the fact that it had a distinct typeface, so I set out to find it on the web, and I did. Just for good measure I found a line art of a dragon creating a “g”, and put that to use.

  10. Design Your Name Created 9/26/12 Software Adobe In-Design Competency This assignment shows my knowledge of the six basic typefaces. Also how to change the type using the size and bold tools. Description The point to this assignment was to find a typeface that best represent your name. I first looked at the six basic typefaces. Then I looked at there cousin typefaces, and picked Rockwell. Evaluation This assignment didn’t take me to long. After describing myself I looked for the best typeface possible, and decided on Rockwell. What I realized though is that almost all the available typefaces are cousins of the six basic typefaces.

  11. Your Favorite Colors Created 9/19/12 Software Adobe In-Design Competency This assignment shows my skills about how to create my own color swatches. Also shows my skills of text wrapping. Description For this assignment I had to create an article with my favorite colors, and it’s name incorporated somewhere on the work piece. I also picked two images that could be text wrapped around the article. Evaluation From this assignment I was able to learn where the color swatches were, and how to create my own. I also learned that depending on which color used, it may show up darker when printed.

  12. Reflection Statement This has been the first graphic design class I have taken at UND. At the beginning of the semester I didn’t know much about graphic design, and I set with a couple goals for the semester. These goals where to learn the Mac programs, understand the principles of graphic design After a semester and about thirty different assignments I’m able to say that I have learned the two Mac programs that are commonly used. Adobe In-Design was a fun program to learn, but there was some challenges along the way. The toughest being everything that can be done with typefaces. It wasn’t until we started doing the projects was I able to get a hang of them. The second program was Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator was also fun to learn, and had it’s own difficulties . Unlike In-Design Illustrator allowed me to create basically anything I wanted. That was were the difficulties started. There are so many tools in the program there just no time to learn everything. Mid ways through the semester the class started to learn about the principles of graphic design. In all there is seven principles of graphic design. Throughout the rest of the semester I have tried to work them in to my assignments. The easiest has been emphasis and balance. In a way a person could create unity in the work piece. All the other principles of graphic design have been tough to use, but in the end I believe I have. Now it’s the end of the semester, and I believe I accomplished the goals I set out to do at the beginning of the semester. Except learning the all of the principles of graphic design. In may spare time from now on I will continue working on my skills to improve them.
