  1. SM2236 Network Based Art The Johnny Cash Project Chan Hei Man Mak Ying Tung Kung Sin Yan

  2. Background • Chris Milk is an American music video director and photographer. • He has directed videos for U2, Green Day , Arcade Fire, etc. • Milk directed the second unit on "A Mother's Promise", the Barack Obama bio film that played before his speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2008.

  3. Background Boards: ‘How did you become involved in the Johnny Cash Project?’ Chris Milk: ‘It was a concept that I was carrying around for a month trying to find an artist it fit with. Because you are giving up so much control over to the end user, you need an artist that is going to generate a lot of positive input.’

  4. “I ran into Rick Rubin, with whom I had worked on a U2/Green Day video with previously. I told him I had this weird video concept if he had, for instance, a left over Johnny Cash single that maybe he was going release for a benefit album or something. He smiled and said it must be fate because he was finishing the final Johnny Cash album and had been at a loss as to what he could possibly do for an accompanying visual.”

  5. “I was fascinated by the idea of letting the collective conscious shape the visual of a music artist, the fans feeding back how they see the artist. We knew it would take a special kind of artist to be able to make it work.”

  6. Concept The Johnny Cash Project • is a tribute to the life and legacy of the music icon, Johnny Cash who passed away in 2003. • is a collaborative online art project, in which anyone can draw a portrait of Johnny with a single image as template, using an online drawing tool • The art from participants combined into a music video for the song ‘Ain't No Grave’ composed of a series of one-of-a-kind portraits.

  7. Concept • By providing a set of drawing tools, the developers of the project ensure some level of consistency from frame to frame of the video, but still leave lots of room for artistic expression and interpretation. • a person doesn’t have to be an artist to use the drawing tool, so anyone can submit a unique piece • As new people discover and contribute to the project, such a living portrait will continue to transform and grow. • It’s virtually never the same video twice.

  8. Concept Why ‘Ain’tNo Grave’? • ‘Ain’t No Grave’ is Johnny’s final Studio recording. • The project pay tribute to the main themes of the album which are mortality, resurrection and everlasting life. • Through the love and contributions of the people around the world that Johnny has touched so deeply, he appears once again before us.

  9. Aesthetic The Johnny Cash Project website is designed in Black and white. A very plain and simple interface.

  10. Black and white found footage in 60s-70s

  11. From found footage to an animation video People could choose a frame of any found footage and start to draw. Crowdscourcing of different frames of drawings turn into an animation video. This is just like a classical animation flip-book.

  12. Brush variation / brush size / grey scale / opacity

  13. What kind of discussions did you have around the animation style? Did you have specific references? Testing of Output No reference for animation every frame was drawn by a completely different artist in a completely different style. Some early tests were done to see how bad the drawings could be and the animation still hold up. Extensive testing of the ideal frame rate was done. To appreciate the individuality of the drawings, but still maintain the persistence of vision of the animation. Eight frames per second seemed to work best.

  14. Vote for a frame

  15. Evolution The beauty of the project is its evolution. Viewing the video is an evolutionary experience.with options for seeing the music set to the highest-rated slides / director-curated slides / most brushstrokes per frame / most recent / random / realistic / pointillism / sketchy / abstract frames.this living portrait will continue to transform and grow, so it’s virtually never the same video twice.

  16. Aesthetic relates to theme Ain’t No Grave is Johnny’s final studio recording. The album and its title track deal heavily with themes of mortality, resurrectionand everlasting life. The Johnny Cash Project pays tribute to these themes.

  23. Discussion • How can it improve? • How important is the subject (Johnny Cash) to the project? • Can the way the artist presented achieve the concept? (The project pay tribute to the main themes of the album which are mortality, resurrection and everlasting life. )
