  1. Revelation LO: I will know about the concept of revelation through sacred writings and how this might affect our ideas about God. New word: Fideism – This is the view that knowledge depends on faith and revelation

  2. THE BIBLE • Is it reliable? Yes or no? Why? • A Christian response: http://www.adrianholloway.com/2001/06/28/how-can-we-trust-the-bible/

  3. REVELATION: QUIZ AND TRADE • You will get a sheet, with a question and answer on it. • Leave your seat and find someone to quiz. • The other person will then quiz you • If BOTH have answered each others questions correctly, then give each other a ‘high five.’ • At the end, SWAP SHEETS, memorise the answer to the new question received and find someone else to quiz. There will be a MINI-QUIZ at the end to see if you have learnt the answers to all of the questions! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gu_fIzO_0ks

  4. REVELATION: KEY WORDS • Revelation: • the act of God revealing himself or knowledge about himself and his will to human beings. • General revelation: • revelation of God available to all people at all times. • Special revelation: • revelation of God to specific people at specific times. • Propositional revelation: • the idea that the process of revelation involves God revealing facts or information • Non-propositional revelation: • the idea that God does not reveal facts or information during the process of revelation. God makes himself known in ordinary human experience. • Natural Theology: • the process of learning about God from the natural world by using reason.

  5. REVELATION ‘THE DISCLOSURE FROM THE DIVINE OF SOMETHING PREVIOUSLY HIDDEN.’ Natural Theology/General RevelationWhat information is available about God to all people all times? What is the role of reason and philosophy? Revealed Theology/Special RevelationWhat is revealed about God to certain people at certain times and places?

  6. THE TWO GO TOGETHER … • The Bible holds the two together; without Moses' encounter with God at the burning bush and later at Sinai (propositional revelation), the departure of Israel from Egypt (non-propositional) would simply have looked like any other migration of people and would not in itself reveal anything. Similarly, the cross of Jesus (non-propositional) without the teaching of Jesus (propositional) to interpret it is simply another Jew being killed unjustly by the Romans. It needs interpretation of events (non-prop.) using words (prop.) to clarify what God is saying.

  7. What is the nature of God’s revelation? Propositional Non-Propositional What is the method of God’s revelation? Creation Conscience Religious Experience Scripture Miracle

  8. Activity - Discussing revelation • Bill: I seem to remember that you weren’t too impressed with the arguments for the existence of God; but aren’t you a Christian? • Ted: I am a Christian but I don’t think you can prove God’s existence through logic and reason. For me, it’s about accepting the revelation God gave in the Bible. • Bill: What do you mean by revelation? • Ted: Revelation is the communication of God to human beings. Human beings are not capable of working out and understanding God. God has to tell us the things he wants us to know. • Bill: I see. As a Muslim I believe that the Qur’an was supernaturally revealed to the prophet Muhammad, PBUH. I think I share your view that arguments cannot prove God’s existence.

  9. A THOUGHT: ‘The Qur'an is at the other end of the spectrum, since it is entirely based on pure propositional revelation, rather than rooted in narrative or historical events. It is dictated by Allah to Mohammed. And mysticism is experience without propositions. So you can set up a spectrum with pure propositional (Islam) at one end (clear, but not rooted in history), pure non-propositional (e.g. modern New Age) at the other end (no clarity at all, but rooted firmly in human experience). And the Bible comes right in the middle of the spectrum, it seems to me, since it combines historical events with divine interpretation through divinely-appointed spokespeople. Steve Walton (Professor of New Testament)

  10. Activity • ‘all Scripture is divinely inspired and has its use for teaching the truth and refuting error, for reformation of manners and discipline in right living.’ 2 Timothy 3:16 • Look at the quotation above. What are the difficulties of saying that ‘all Scripture’ is inspired by God?

  11. TASK • ‘Believing in revelation means that philosophical arguments are no longer relevant.’ • Revelation through scripture has more authority than religious experience • Write a short essay either agreeing or disagreeing with these statements.

  12. PLENARY • What have you learnt from this unit?
