  3. BIG numbers 1957 One nine five seven nineteen fifty-seven

  4. Practise with these dates: 1996 1901 1940 1928 1908 1919 1990 1913

  5. 21st Century Dates 2001 2006 2010 2011 2012 2030 “Two thousand and …” or “Twenty –”

  6. Other BIG numbers • Use ‘and’ 239 - two hundred AND thirty -nine 3045 – three thousand AND forty-five 204 – two hundred AND four 8006 - eight thousand AND six * Not in American English

  7. Other BIG numbers • ‘Round’ numbers in thousands are often read as ‘hundreds’ 1100 - eleven hundred 3500 – thirty-five hundred 3246 – three thousand, two hundred and forty-six

  8. Number ‘1’ The number ‘1’ is commonly pronounced as ‘a’ when it is the first digit. e.g. 150 would be read as ‘a hundred and fifty’.
