Understanding the Complex Role of Child Soldiers in Armed Conflict

This piece explores the dual perspective on child soldiers, highlighting their portrayal as both victims and perpetrators. While the United Nations acknowledges that child soldiers may commit violent acts, it emphasizes their coerced participation due to manipulation and brainwashing. They often identify their commanders as family, leading to a cycle of violence that is difficult to escape. This analysis considers the moral implications of holding children accountable for actions taken under duress, urging for a deeper understanding of their plight.

Theywere brainwashed into thinking that the soldiers were their only ‘family’. As a result, they go back to the commanders and continue to act out violently because it’s the only thing that they’ve been trained to think is normal and acceptable.
